2018 Fantasy Football QB Waiver-Wire Options Heading Into Week 5

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be owned in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some quarterback waiver-wire options that I like heading into Week 5 (Yahoo! ownership in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by my preference to add.]

1. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars (32 percent)

Bortles threw for a career-high 388 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's win over the Jets as he finished the game with 24.32 fantasy points. Through a quarter season, Bortles has been a two-outcome quarterback. In other words, he has either thrown for 176 yards or less (twice) or thrown for 376 yards or more (twice).

Going into Week 5, Bortles is set up to have one of his better outings given the plus matchup against the Chiefs. While the Jags have the league's most talented defense, they will face Patrick Mahomes and the red-hot Chiefs offense next week. Bortles has at least 33 pass attempts in all four games this season and that trend could continue in Week 5.

2. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens (25 percent)

Only three quarterbacks -- Kirk Cousins (189), Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck (186) -- have more pass attempts than Flacco (171) through Week 4. Flacco has 1,252 passing yards with an eight-to-two TD-INT ratio and he's on pace to shatter his yardage and TD career highs. With multiple touchdown passes in three of four games, Flacco has finished as the weekly QB7, QB13, QB18 and QB12, respectively. He's a high-upside QB2 the rest of the way.

3. Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans (33 percent)

With only 203 passing yards entering Week 4, Mariota looked to be much healthier as he threw for 344 yards and two scored against the Eagles in addition to rushing for 46 yards and another score. With 30.36 fantasy points, Mariota is the weekly QB7 in Week 4. With a plus matchup against the Bills, it's possible that Mariota once again finishes as a weekly top-12 fantasy quarterback.

4. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders (36 percent)

In an overtime victory, Carr threw for 437 yards and four touchdowns on Sunday. While he has now thrown multiple interceptions in three of four games, Carr has also exceeded the 300-yard mark in each of those three games.

Going into MNF, Carr ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards (1,373) and fifth in pass attempts (169). Unfortunately, he has also thrown more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six).

While the Raiders got their first win of the season, they are going to be underdogs almost every week with the likely need to air it out. The interceptions may continue, but Carr should have more 300-yard, multi-TD games in his future as well.
