New York Jets Week 2 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

Throughout the 2020 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the New York Jets rank in terms of average, best and worst:

  • Average ranking: 31.8 (32nd)
  • Best ranking: 31st (USA Today)
  • Worst ranking: 32nd (Multiple)

Below you will find a Week 2 roundup for the Jets in our consensus 2020 NFL Power Rankings.

The Athletic -- Rank: 32

What we learned: They have no offensive identity. Early in the game, they were faced with a 3rd-and-9 from their own 20. "The Jets have run five plays for 4 yards," said CBS play-by-play announcer Andrew Catalon. Darnold sensed a blitz was coming and threw a screen to Chris Hogan that was stopped for no gain. The Jets were forced to punt. It was representative of the lack of talent on their roster and the lack of creativity from Adam Gase and this coaching staff. Only the Jaguars and Washington produced fewer total yards than the Jets (254) in Week 1. The last three seasons in which Gase has called plays, his offenses have finished 31st, 26th and 27th in efficiency. The first game offered no hope for improvement.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 32

It's going to be a long season for the Jets. The talent simply is not there. Sam Darnold has little around him. It's going to be a long season for the Jets. The talent simply is not there. USA Today -- Rank: 31

Little to like about Sunday's performance ... except Marcus Maye (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass break-ups). NYJ might wind up paying a safety after all.

ESPN -- Rank: 32

Best rookie debut: LT Mekhi Becton
Facing a very good Buffalo front, the Jets' first-round pick held up reasonably well, especially in pass protection. He allowed one sack, per ESPN Stats & Info, but it was a borderline "coverage" sack. Becton held his own against Jerry Hughes and displayed the ability to finish blocks in both the passing and running games, tossing the defender on a couple of occasions. He handled speed on the edge, no small task without a preseason. He was one of the few bright spots for the Jets. -- Rich Cimini

NFL.com -- Rank: 32

Outclassed and outcoached. That's the succinct way to describe the season opener, a 27-17 loss to the Bills that wasn't nearly that close in reality. Josh Allen piled up nearly 400 yards with his arm and legs, while his counterpart, Sam Darnold, showed no evidence of greater comfort in his second year in Adam Gase's system. Darnold has the deck stacked against him on multiple levels, but that doesn't excuse the errant passes and poor decision-making that we saw for most of the afternoon in Orchard Park. Darnold now gets the 49ers in Week 2, and it looks like he won't have Le'Veon Bell, who could miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury. (UPDATE: The Jets are placing Bell on injured reserve, per NFL Network's Kim Jones, which means they will be without him for at least three weeks.) The Jets feel like a bad news factory right now.
