Week 1 Houston Texans NFL Power Rankings Roundup

Throughout the 2020 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the Houston Texans rank in terms of average, best and worst:

  • Average ranking: 18.8 (19th)
  • Best ranking: 16th (NFL.com)
  • Worst ranking: 24th (ESPN)

Below you will find a Week 1 roundup for the Texans in our consensus 2020 NFL Power Rankings.

The Athletic -- Rank: 17

Bill O'Brien has reshaped the offense to fit his vision. Perhaps now the Texans can finish in the top-15 in offensive efficiency for the first time since he took over as head coach. Deshaun Watson gives them a chance against the league's best teams, and Houston has a high floor as long as he's healthy. But this defense could be one of the league's worst, and I'm unconvinced that swapping out DeAndre Hopkins for Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb and David Johnson will result in a net positive.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 18

Deshaun Watson might be asked to do even more, and that's saying something considering what he's done already. They have major questions on defense.

USA Today -- Rank: 19

Raise your hand if you predicted Zach Cunningham would become third-richest inside linebacker in NFL history? Good, we didn't foresee it, either. But that Deshaun Watson windfall was inevitable – and deserved.

ESPN -- Rank: 24

Will David Johnson's productivity justify the DeAndre Hopkins trade?

Sarah Barshop: Last season for the Texans, Carlos Hyde had a career year, running for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns on 245 carries. Coach Bill O'Brien likes having one feature back in his offense, so Johnson should get plenty of opportunities. It remains to be seen whether he can be both healthy and effective over an entire 16-game season.

NFL.com -- Rank: 16

The Texans made a very wise decision in working out a deal with Deshaun Watson, signing the superstar QB to a four-year, $160 million extension a week before kickoff. Actually, it's a win-win for everyone: Bill O'Brien no longer enters 2020 with the anvil representing Watson's uncertain future hanging over his head, and Watson gets a huge bag while setting himself up for an even bigger bite at the apple down the road. BOB and Houston were righteously skewered for the DeAndre Hopkins trade, but no one should be stunned when we look at the AFC South standings in late December and see the Texans right in the mix. With Watson at the controls, this team will always have a higher floor than people realize.
