The Athletic -- Rank: 29
They had a bunch of chances to steal that game against the Giants. Washington produced explosive plays with Alex Smith but turned the ball over five times. They're not a good team, but they're a frisky team that plays hard. It looks like Smith will take over as the starter, due to Kyle Allen's injury. Washington still has a 15.7 percent chance to win the division.

They will now have to play Alex Smith at quarterback. It's a great story, but it's probably not what they wanted.
USA Today -- Rank: 29
Rough year in nation's capital, but QB Alex Smith -- he threw his first TD pass since 2018 on Sunday -- may now have a pretty clear path to comeback player of the year. This organization could use that kind of heartwarming story.

Recalibrated expectation: Split the final eight games
This is unlikely, but with Detroit, Cincinnati, Dallas and Carolina on the schedule, it's at least feasible -- or dreamable. Five wins overall would probably qualify as more realistic. But Washington going 4-4 in the final eight would not qualify as the most unlikely thing to have happened in 2020. The problem is, who knows how long Alex Smith can last at quarterback or how he'll play long term -- or if Dwayne Haskins will be of much help if he ever returns. And the defense, despite lofty stats, hasn't produced consistently. If Washington gets to six wins this season, that would qualify as a big achievement. -- John Keim

Yep, it was another game in Washington Football Team history where the starting quarterback suffered a nasty lower leg injury. This time it was Kyle Allen, who is headed for surgery after enduring a dislocated and fractured ankle in a 23-20 loss to the Giants. Alex Smith -- the previous Washington signal-caller to experience a horrific leg injury -- replaced Allen and threw his first touchdown pass since 2018. Unfortunately, he also threw three interceptions, including the game-sealer late in the fourth quarter. With Allen headed to IR, Smith is expected to lead the way, which begs the question: Just how deep in the dog house is 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins? We talkin' miles, here?
