Week 17 Fantasy Football Start'em, Sit'em: Quarterbacks

If you're reading this, congratulations!

With most fantasy football leagues concluding after Week 17, there is no reason for you to be reading this if you weren't playing in your league's Championship Week.

Below you will find some players that could be starts or sits in your league, but my fantasy football rankings will better help you determine if I would start Player X over Player Y.

Week 17 Fantasy Football Start'em

Matthew Stafford, QB, Los Angeles Rams (at ATL)

Despite non-existent rushing stats (actually, worse than non-existent at minus two yards), Stafford leads all passers in yardage (4,179) and touchdowns (40, 7.7%), has a league-low 1.0 INT% and currently ranks as fantasy's QB3 on the year. Based on Week 17 NFL implied totals, only the Cincinnati Bengals have a higher projected total than Stafford and the Rams. Even if Davante Adams (hamstring) misses another week, Stafford remains a top-five option in Championship Week.

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars (at IND)

Lawrence has been on a tear. Over the past five weeks, he has finished as fantasy's QB7, QB5, QB13, QB1, and QB2, respectively. Lawrence has a career-high seven rushing touchdowns this season including scores in back-to-back games. In fact, he has scored a combined 10 (TEN!) touchdowns over the past two weeks.

See the table below, but Lawrence is the only quarterback to throw for three-plus scores and rush for another in back-to-back games since 2022. And if he extends the streak, he'll become the first quarterback in league history to do so in three consecutive games.

Tyler Shough, QB, New Orleans Saints (at TEN)

Have the Saints found their long-term answer at quarterback? Probably not (or at least it's too early to tell), but Shough has played reasonably well with four consecutive 17-point fantasy performances. Given the injuries at quarterback (Patrick Mahomes, Jayden Daniels, Lamar Jackson?, etc.), Shough could be a plug-and-play option off the waiver wire for managers battling the injury bug at quarterback and still alive.

Week 17 Fantasy Football Sit'em

Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers (vs. HOU)

Herbert has overcome a lot (season-ending injuries to Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, a broken non-throwing hand, etc.) to keep the train on the track. Herbert lit up the Cowboys defense (who hasn't, right?!) last week, but he scored under 15 fantasy points in each of his previous five outings. And the matchup this week gets much tougher. Only the Minnesota Vikings have allowed fewer fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season. While the Chargers are small favorites in Week 17, they play in one of only four games with an over-under below 40 points.

C.J. Stroud, QB, Houston Texans (at LAC)

Missing several games earlier this season, Stroud has since returned to start (and finish) each of Houston's past four games. During that span, he has accounted for multiple touchdowns only once. As noted above, the Chargers-Texans matchup has a low total, and the Texans have a bottom eight implied total for the week.

Jordan Love: Love, who missed Weeks 2 and 3, finished 2024 with 3,389 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Not only was he a non-factor as a rusher (25/83/1), but his splits, as a passer, were also rough last season:

  • Weeks 1-7: 15 PaTDs (3 TDs/G); 1,351 PaYD (270.2/G); 22.2 Fantasy PPG
  • Weeks 8-18: 10 PaTDs (1 TD/G); 2,038 PaYD (203.8/G); 13.4 Fantasy PPG

Slowed as he battled injuries in 2024, Love is poised to run more often (although nobody will confuse him for Lamar Jackson or Jayden Daniels), and he has a chance to rebound in 2025. (He was fantasy's QB5 in 2023.)

Jared Goff: The main concern with Goff is losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, but new offensive coordinator John Morton was a senior offensive assistant when Johnson became OC in 2022. Another concern is the loss of center Frank Ragnow (retirement) and Kevin Zeitler (free agency), but the Lions have a very talented group of pass catchers — Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, etc.. Goff has finished as fantasy's QB10, QB7, and QB6, respectively, over the past three seasons.

Jayden Daniels: For good reason, Daniels was a favorite of many as a late-round target in fantasy drafts, and the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year delivered for those who rostered him in 2024. Daniels' ADP was QB12 (or a little later, depending on the site), and the dual-threat quarterback finished his rookie season as a top-five fantasy quarterback. Along with Lamar Jackson (2023 and 2024) and Kyler Murray (2020), Daniels became only the third quarterback in NFL history to throw and run for at least 3,500 and 800 yards, respectively, in the same season. The front office's offseason moves support his continued development as he enters year two.

Matthew Stafford: The duo of Puka Nacua and Davante Adams arguably form the most talented wide receiver duo in the league west of Cincinnati (Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins). That said, Stafford has averaged only 12.9, 16.9, and 13.9 fantasy points per game over the past three seasons, respectively. Stafford's back issues shouldn't keep him from starting in Week 1, but fantasy managers who roster Nacua and/or Adams will collectively hold their breathes following every quarterback hit.

2025 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts

The best way to become good at something is to practice. So, what should you do if you want to draft a better fantasy football team?

Practice, of course!

Leading up to the start of the 2025 NFL season, we will use the fantasy football mock draft simulator to complete fantasy football mock drafts. And we will do so using a variety of scoring formats — point per reception (PPR), half-PPR, standard scoring and even 2-QB leagues — and league sizes. The goal is to provide you with a good representation of the team that you may be able to draft given your league settings while also providing the rationale of why we made the picks we did.

That said, nothing beats practicing yourself so (check out the simulator) and complete a mock in a matter of minutes.

Half-PPR Mock Draft: 12 Teams, 4th Pick

Starting positions: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 K, 1 DST; Bench spots: 6

Embed from Getty Images

1.04 - Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions

It was tough to pass up CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson at 1.04, but I loaded up on wide receiver and really love the value I got with my WR4/WR5. Gibbs set or tied career highs across the board in rushing (250/1,412/16, 5.6 YPC) and receiving (52/517/4, 9.9 Y/R) in his second season. Gibbs was also top five among running backs with a minimum of 17 targets in yards per route run (1.67) and YAC per reception (11.5), per PFF. Gibbs was especially good when David Montgomery missed the final three regular-season games (RB1 overall), but he was also the RB3 (RB4 on a PPG basis) from Weeks 1 to 15 when Montgomery was also active.

2.09 - A.J. Brown, WR, Philadelphia Eagles

AJB missed four games in 2024 but channeled his inner excellence to finish with 67 receptions for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns. While there were some quiet games, Brown's 2024 per-game averages of receptions (5.2) and yards (83.0) weren't that much lower than his career averages (5.7/86.8). Big days from Saquon Barkley could lead to low pass volume in any given week, but I expect more passing overall from Jalen Hurts (24.1 attempts/G in 2024) in 2025. As a comparison, Hurts averaged 30.4 pass attempts per game from 2021-2023 with a minimum of 28.8 per game in each of those three seasons.

MORE: Jalen Hurts 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook

3.04 - Tee Higgins, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

While he would be a WR1 elsewhere, Higgins will continue to benefit from being the 1B to Ja'Marr Chase. While he has missed exactly five games in back-to-back seasons, Higgins finished second (behind Chase) among all wide receivers in fantasy points per game in 2024.

4.09 - Terry McLaurin, WR, Washington Commanders

McLaurin, who recently agreed to a three-year extension, has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in five consecutive seasons, and he's been remarkably consistent — 77-87 catches and 1,002-1,191 yards in each of the past five seasons. Likely touchdown regression following last year's spike (13, nearly double his previous career high) and a slow start following his hold-in are potential concerns. Beyond that, however, McLaurin is the top weapon in one of the league's best offenses (seventh in yardage and fifth in scoring in 2024) and Jayden Daniels should be even better in year two.

Matthew Stafford: There were concerns with Stafford and his elbow heading into the 2022 season, and the veteran quarterback managed to appear in only nine games due to a spinal cord contusion. Stafford threw 10 touchdowns (3.3 TD%, his lowest since 2012) and eight interceptions and averaged 6.9 yards per attempt (lowest since 2018) with an 87.4 passer rating (lowest since 2014). If Stafford can stay healthy in 2023, how close will he be to the 2021 version who led the Rams to the Super Bowl?

Cam Akers: Akers missed nearly all of 2021 with a torn Achilles, but his volume has fluctuated quite a bit when healthy. Much of his 2022 production came during the final six weeks of the season when he finished with 104 carries for 512 yards (4.92 YPC) and six touchdowns and 11 receptions for 99 yards on 12 targets. Only Christian McCaffrey (767) — and wide receiver A.J. Brown — had more YFS from Weeks 13-18 than Akers (611).

Kyren Williams: He may be small (5-9 and 194 pounds) and slow (4.65 40-yard dash) by NFL standards, but Williams profiles as a third-down back who also has a shot to lead the team's running backs in receptions.

Cooper Kupp: Kupp pulled off the rare triple crown of receiving in 2021, finishing with 145 catches for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. While he missed roughly half of his follow-up season, the 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year had a better season than maybe most realized. Who led ALL receivers in half-PPR fantasy points scored in 2022 on a per-game basis? Yep, it was Kupp — not Justin Jefferson, or any other receiver. Of course, the problem is his hamstring and his uncertain status following his recent setback.

Van Jefferson: Making his season debut in Week 8 (and playing mostly when Kupp was out), Jefferson had only 24 catches for 369 yards and three touchdowns in nine games last season. Jefferson is an uninspiring WR5 in fantasy, but could move into the WR3 range if/when Kupp misses time.

Matthew Stafford: There were concerns with Stafford and his elbow heading into the 2022 season, and the veteran quarterback managed to appear in only nine games due to a spinal cord contusion. Stafford threw 10 touchdowns (3.3 TD%, lowest since 2012) and eight interceptions and averaged 6.9 yards per attempt (lowest since 2018) with an 87.4 passer rating (lowest since 2014). The good news is that he's at full health this offseason. If he can stay healthy in 2023, how close will he be to the 2021 version who led the Rams to the Super Bowl and finished as a top-five fantasy quarterback?

Cam Akers: While he missed nearly all of 2021 with a torn Achilles, Akers has gone from workhorse to the coach's doghouse and back to workhorse, when healthy. Much of Akers' 2022 production came in the final six weeks of the season when he finished with 104 carries for 512 yards (4.92 YPC) and six touchdowns and 11 receptions for 99 yards on 12 targets.

Kyren Williams: Small (5-9 and 194 pounds) and slow (4.65 40-yard dash) by NFL standards, Williams profiles as a change-of-pace option for Akers who has a shot to lead the team's running backs in receptions.

Lance McCutcheon112.60.10002.36

Cooper Kupp: Kupp pulled off the rare triple crown of receiving in 2021, finishing with 145 catches for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. While he missed roughly half of his follow-up season, the 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year had a better season than maybe most realized.

Who led ALL receivers in half-PPR fantasy points scored in 2022 on a per-game basis? Yep, it was Kupp — not Justin Jefferson, or any other receiver. Kupp will be at full strength heading into 2023, and he'll be someone I hope slips to me in drafts this year.

Tyler Higbee: Higbee set career highs in targets (108, fourth-most among TEs) and receptions (72, fifth) in 2022. While Cooper Kupp missed nearly half of the season, Higbee's per-game numbers were better with Kupp (4.9/43 on 7.2 targets) than without Kupp (3.5/29 on 5.4 targets). At a position where volume is inconsistent outside of the elite options, there is plenty of value in the consistency of Higbee's volume.

Our 2022 Fantasy Football Projections will be viewable by both position and team.

Below you will find our 2022 fantasy football projections for the Los Angeles Rams.

QUARTERBACKS

Matthew Stafford: Stafford finished his first season in L.A. as fantasy's QB6 and a Super Bowl champion. His connection with Cooper Kupp was immediate and Stafford is now on the other end of the two highest receiving yardage totals in NFL history -- Calvin Johnson's 1,964 (2012) and Kupp's 1,947 (2021). In addition to Kupp, Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson and Tyler Higbee round out a solid group of pass catchers that should allow Stafford to have another strong season. While elbow pain for a quarterback is never a positive, there seems to be no real concern from the Rams.

Jake Funk23.895.20.362.216.20.115

Cam Akers: Closing his rookie 2020 campaign with 94 touches for 436 yards from scrimmage over his final four games, Akers was poised to enter 2021 as the team's featured back before an Achilles injury forced him to miss nearly all of last season. While it's remarkable how quickly he was able to get back on the field after sustaining the injury, it is something that can continue to impact his effectiveness throughout the 2022 season.

Darrell Henderson: With Akers missing most of 2021, Henderson set career highs in touches (178, 14.8/G). Henderson missed five games last season as well and has his own durability concerns, but he would handle double-digit touches per game if Akers were to miss any time again.

Cooper Kupp: The NFL Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl LVI MVP, Kupp had an absolutely dominant season in 2021. Not only did he become the fourth player in the Super Bowl era to win the triple crown of receiving, leading the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947) and touchdowns (16), but his receptions and yardage totals each rank as the second-most ever. Even without repeating last year's historic numbers, there's a good chance he leads the league's wideouts in fantasy points in 2022.

Allen Robinson: After spending four seasons in Jacksonville and four in Chicago, Robinson moves on to a much better situation with Matthew Stafford and the Rams. Despite a disappointing 2021 season (38/410/1 in 12 games), Robinson has three seasons with at least 1,147 yards in his career including 2019 and 2020.

Van Jefferson: A cleanup procedure on his knee seems likely to sideline him for Week 1, Jefferson is L.A.'s No. 3 wideout behind Kupp and Robinson, when healthy. Jefferson finished his second season with 50 catches for 802 yards and six touchdowns and as a top-36 fantasy wide receiver across all scoring formats in 2021.

Tyler Higbee: Higbee enters 2022 as a borderline TE1/TE2. As an every-down player, Higbee has exceeded the 500-yard mark over each of the past three seasons.

In addition to Kupp, Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson and Tyler Higbee round out a solid group of pass catchers that should allow Stafford to have another strong season. While more comfortable in the offense, Stafford is dealing with an "abnormal for a quarterback" elbow situation, although the veteran signal-caller played through arm pain last season too.
