QUARTERBACKS

PlayerAtt.Comp.YardsTDINTRushYardsTDPoints
Bryce Young523.8335.23666.621.4813.3653214.71.33235.31
Andy Dalton33.421.8232.11.40.96.821.10.1416.03

Bryce Young: It is no surprise that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft will be the Week 1 starter, but his dynasty outlook vastly outweighs his fantasy value in redraft leagues. Ups and downs should be expected for any rookie, but Young is always composed, processes information quickly and thrives when extending and making plays outside of structure.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Miles Sanders203923.75.4832.7251.51.4175.15
Chuba Hubbard108.2465.32.8121.4159.80.995.47
Raheem Blackshear69.9286.61.9919.3144.30.869.48

Miles Sanders: Sanders set career highs in rushing last season with 259 carries for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. Through four NFL seasons, he has averaged 5.02 yards per carry running behind the league's best offensive line. With Jalen Hurts under center, Sanders (and Philly's running backs) weren't targeted often, but he had 50 receptions as a rookie in 2019. There's a good chance that he's more involved as a receiver than he was over the past several seasons.

Chuba Hubbard: Sanders played a full 17-game slate last season, but he played only 12 games in each of the previous two seasons. While Sanders (groin) says he'll be ready to go for Week 1, Hubbard would likely handle the largest share of the workload if Sanders were to miss any time this season.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Adam Thielen53.6596.54000110.45
D.J. Chark45.26553.5000109.1

Laviska Shenault Jr.23.2251.51.410.155.60.5153.77
Ihmir Smith-Marsette4.146.80.30008.53

Adam Thielen: After spending his entire career in Minnesota, Thielen begins anew with the Panthers and a rookie quarterback in his age-33 season. Thielen has has a minimum of 67 catches and 710 yards in each of the past three seasons, and he's one of five players with at least 30 touchdowns during that span, per Stathead.

D.J. Chark: Chark will compete with Adam Thielen, Terrace Marshall Jr. and Jonathan Mingo for targets, which means that Chark has a real shot to lead the team's wide receivers in fantasy points in 2023. Chark has appeared in only 28 games over the past three seasons, but he had a breakout age-23 season before that with 73/1,008/8 in 2019. Chark (hamstring) says he's optimistic about his Week 1 availability.

Jonathan Mingo: The Panthers used a top-40 pick on Mingo, a big receiver (6-2, 220) who had a strong showing at the combine (4.46 40-yard dash, 39.5" vertical jump and 22 bench press reps). While the college production wasn't elite as a four-year starter, he's a good route runner who uses his size and strong hands to win in contested-catch situations.

TIGHT ENDS

Ian Thomas15.2154100029
Tommy Tremble12.5128.70.900024.52
Giovanni Ricci2.323.40.10004.09

Hayden Hurst: Hurst is playing for his fourth team since being drafted in the first round in 2018. While he has missed four games in back-to-back seasons, he averaged a career high in receptions per game (4.0) last season with the Bengals. Hurst has averaged only 8.1 yards per reception over the past two seasons, but he has the potential to post comparable numbers to last year (52/414/2).

There's a good chance that he's more involved as a receiver than he was over the past several seasons. Sanders is dealing with a hamstring injury, but Frank Reich says he thinks that Sanders is "getting close."

Chuba Hubbard: Sanders played a full 17-game last season, but he's currently dealing with a hamstring injury and appeared in only 12 games in both 2020 and 2021. While Sanders should be ready to go before Week 1, Hubbard would likely handle the largest share of the workload in the event that Sanders were to miss any time, and he averaged 4.9 YPC last season.

Baker Mayfield: Two seasons ago, Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Things were much different last year, as Mayfield tried to play through injuries that should have kept him on the sidelines, but the former No. 1 overall pick gets a chance at a fresh start in Carolina.

Christian McCaffrey: McCaffrey has played just 10 games over the past two seasons combined. In those 10 games, he has averaged 115.9 scrimmage yards, 5.4 receptions and 0.8 touchdowns per game. Before that, CMC led the NFL in scrimmage yards (2,392), touchdowns (19) and touches (403) in 2019 and became the third player in NFL history to reach the 1,000-yard rushing and receiving milestones in the same season. If his health cooperates, he has as high of a ceiling and floor as any running back including Jonathan Taylor.

D.J. Moore: Moore set career highs in both targets (163) and receptions (93) in 2021. While he's been limited to a degree by poor quarterback play, he has exceeded the 1,100-yard mark in three consecutive seasons and I have him projected to finish above that mark in 2022 as well.

Robbie Anderson: Anderson's second season with the Panthers was a huge disappointment as his production plummeted. He finished with 53/519/5 in 17 games in 2021 after posting a 95/1,096/3 line in 2020. Baker Mayfield should help the offense become more efficient than it was in 2021, but there a number of receivers that could cut into Anderson's snaps behind D.J. Moore, the team's unquestioned WR1.

Tommy Tremble: Carolina's tight ends posted modest numbers in 2021, but Tremble led the position group in fantasy production as a rookie. Although he's off the radar in single-TE leagues, the second-year tight end should post even better numbers in 2022 and once again lead the team's position group in production.

Things were much different last year, as Mayfield tried to play through injuries that should have kept him on the sidelines, but now the former No. 1 overall pick gets a chance at a fresh start in Carolina. While Matt Rhule hasn't declared the team's regular-season starter, it appears to be his "job to lose."

Sam Darnold: Although still young (recently turned 25), Darnold's career stats through four seasons are not good -- 59.8%, 3.3 TD%, 3.2 INT% and 6.5 Y/A. Even if there really were an open quarterback competition with Mayfield, it's unlikely that Darnold would come out on top.

Matt Corral: Corral slipped to the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but he throws with a quick release and has the mobility to extend and make plays. It's unlikely that Corral will make starts as a rookie, barring injury, until the Panthers are out of playoff contention.

Week 4 Fantasy Football RB Start'em, Sit'em

The decision on which player to start, or sit, largely comes down to the options on your roster (and/or possibly the players available on your league's waiver wire).

As an example, Chuba Hubbard is listed below as a "start" for Week 4. And I'd certainly be comfortable going into Week 4 with him as my starting quarterback.

Then again, Hubbard may be a "sit" for your team.

In other words, if you roster Austin Ekeler, Nick Chubb and Hubbard and start only two running backs, you should start Ekeler and Chubb and, in turn, bench Hubbard.

For a more direct answer on whether we would start Player X over Player Y, check our Week 4 Fantasy Football Rankings. Instead of making those direct comparisons, the goal here is to highlight players that we like, or dislike, for the week.

Week 4 Fantasy Football RB Start'em

Chuba Hubbard, Carolina Panthers (at DAL)

With the injury to Christian McCaffrey (hamstring), Hubbard will make the start on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. There was a wide margin between Hubbard (39 snaps) and Royce Freeman (10) in Week 3. Of course, no (backup) player will be able to replicate what CMC could do for this offense and fantasy managers, but Mike Davis demonstrated how productive a backup could be in this same situation last year.

The Cowboys have been a much better defense early in 2021 and have allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. That said, they have also allowed opposing running backs to rush for 4.97 YPC (sixth-most in 2021). For as long as McCaffrey misses time, however, Hubbard's significant bump in usage makes him a viable weekly RB2.

D'Andre Swift, Detroit Lions (at CHI)

Few teams, if any, have a receiving corps as weak as Detroit's. Of course, the team has one of the league's better tight ends, T.J. Hockenson, and he leads the Lions in receiving yards (173). The team leader in receptions (19) and targets (23), however, is Swift, who ranks second on the team in receiving yards (166).

Heading into Week 4, Swift leads all running backs in receiving yards. In addition, only Pittsburgh's Najee Harris has more receptions and targets than Swift. The Bears have allowed only nine running back receptions this season, but they have allowed the second-most Y/R (11.89) to opposing running backs this season.

Due to his receiving prowess, Swift is best in (full) PPR formats (RB4), but he has performed as a top-10 back across all scoring formats. Swift was likely a "start" for you whether he appeared on this list or not, but he is a top-eight back in half-PPR formats this week.

David Montgomery, Chicago Bears (vs. DET)

Like Swift, Montgomery is ranked higher this week than he was in our preseason rankings. Montgomery has been a solid RB2 (RB18 in half-PPR scoring), but he's a viable RB1 (top-12 option) this week.

In Justin Fields' debut as a starter, the Bears offense including Montgomery struggled to get anything going against the Browns. In that game, Montgomery handled season highs in his share of rush attempts (76.92%) and targets (20.0%). In a softer matchup this week against the Lions, we should see improvement from Fields, Montgomery and the Bears offense overall. The Lions have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season.

Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns (at MIN)

Even though Nick Chubb missed four games in 2020, both Chubb (RB9) and Kareem Hunt (RB10) finished the year as top-10 fantasy running backs (half-PPR scoring). Through the month of September, the Browns once again have a pair of top-10 fantasy running backs.

Only the Saints (56.97%) have a higher run-play percentage than the Browns (53.4%). Not only do both backs average at least 90 YFS per game, but the workload split is fairly close between Chubb (17 touches per game) and Hunt (13/G) and Hunt is much more involved as a receiver.

Chase Edmonds, Arizona Cardinals (at LAR)

Edmonds has yet to score a touchdown this season. Edmonds has also finished as a top-24 fantasy running back every week (half-PPR scoring). Through three weeks, Edmonds has a total of 17 targets, tied for third-most among all running backs. In those games, he's finished with the following receiving lines: 4/43, 5/29 and 7/49.

While he's heavily involved as a receiver, he is also averaging double-digit carries (10.3) per game as well. Because of his role as a receiver, however, Edmonds has a solid RB2 floor with RB1 upside if he scores his first touchdown of the season.

Week 4 Fantasy Football RB Sit'em

Damien Harris, New England Patriots (vs. TB)

In the first two weeks, Harris had 25 and 17 touches, respectively. Last week, he had only eight. Not only did the Patriots lose last week's game by 15 points, but the Saints have a stout run defense.

Given the difficult matchup against the Buccaneers, who also have one of the league's best run defenses, the Patriots game plan is unlikely to give Harris the type of workload he'd need to be a top-24 back for the week. The Bucs allow the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and the Patriots have the eighth-lowest implied total as touchdown underdogs in Tom Brady's return to Foxboro.

Kenyan Drake, Las Vegas Raiders (at LAC)

Drake has a minimum of five targets in each of his first three games. In addition, only Najee Harris (27) and D'Andre Swift (23) have more targets among running backs than Drake (17).

Even though Josh Jacobs is a game-time decision for Monday Night Football, we know that Drake's role won't change regardless of whether Jacobs is active or not. In his first three games as a Raider (one with Jacobs, two without him), Drake has 11, 12 and 11 touches, respectively. In fact, Peyton Barber has out-touched Drake by a margin of 39-23 over the past two weeks combined.

No team has allowed a higher YPC to opposing running backs (5.46) than the Los Angeles Chargers this season. If Jacobs is inactive, Barber would be in the low-end RB2 mix. Either way, Drake is nothing more than a flex.

Ty'Son Williams, Baltimore Ravens (at DEN)

Williams was fantasy's RB9 and RB17, respectively, in the first two weeks of the season. In what should have been another opportunity for an RB2-level performance against the Detroit Lions, Williams managed just five carries for 22 scoreless yards and failed to catch his lone target. For the first time this season, a different back (Latavius Murray, seven) had more touches than Williams.

Le'Veon Bell may not get (m)any touches, but he will be active in Week 4 as he joins Murray, Williams and Devonta Freeman. Given the difficult matchup against the Denver Broncos and the uncertainty around workload allocation, Williams is better off on your bench this week.

James Conner, Arizona Cardinals (at LAR)

Conner rushed for multiple touchdowns last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The duo of Conner and Edmonds have a fairly even split in carries this season -- 35 (Conner) to 31 (Edmonds). While he's the favorite for any goal-line carries, Conner has only one target through three games. Because of his non-existent role in the passing game, Conner will be a TD-dependent play in games where the Cards aren't big favorites. In the two weeks where he didn't score, he finished as fantasy's RB43 and RB57, respectively.

Fantasy Football Projections 2021: Carolina Panthers

Our 2021 Fantasy Football Projections will be viewable by both position and team.

Below you will find our 2021 fantasy football projections for the Carolina Panthers.

QUARTERBACKS

P.J. Walker63.637.2429.32.71.9114.822.20.1527.27

Sam Darnold: While he has missed three-plus games in each of his first three seasons, Darnold gets a fresh start in Carolina. With Teddy Bridgewater in Denver and no high rookie draft pick waiting his turn, Darnold is Carolina's unquestioned starter for the 2021 season. Reunited with Robby Anderson, Darnold has the most-talented group of pass-catchers of his career as he enters his age-24 season. Given that Teddy Bridgewater finished last season as a top-20 fantasy quarterback, Darnold will likely outperform his ADP if he can stay healthy.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Christian McCaffrey261.91178.611.1388738.84.6330.12

Royce Freeman33.8138.60.7611.182.60.535.23

Christian McCaffrey: If you drafted McCaffrey first overall in 2020, you likely found little solace that he was fantasy's top-scoring back over the three-week window in which he appeared (Weeks 1, 2 and 9). In those games, however, CMC handled 76 touches including 17 receptions, racked up 374 yards from scrimmage and scored six total touchdowns. All of those numbers were either first or second among running backs in that split timeframe.

Before his lost season due to injury, McCaffrey was nearly an every-snap iron man in 2019. Heading into his age-25 season, he remains the top choice for me in 2021 drafts.

Chuba Hubbard: Hubbard has elite top-end speed, but Carolina's fourth-round pick is in the mix to be the handcuff to one of the league's most versatile do-it-all backs. While Mike Davis was one of the most valuable waiver-wire adds in 2020, Hubbard (or Royce Freeman) will likely have limited touches and fantasy relevance without another McCaffrey injury in 2021.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Shi Smith11133.9100024.89
Brandon Zylstra5.973.70.600013.92

D.J. Moore: Moore averaged only 6.9 targets per game through his first 10 games, but that number jumped to 9.8 over his final five games. In addition, three of his four 100-yard games occurred over that final five-game stretch. Even though his 55.9% catch rate was a career low, the 23-year-old receiver's ADOT (13.2), Y/R (18.1) and receiving yards (1,193) were all career highs.

Robby Anderson: Year 1 in Carolina was generally a success for Anderson, who set career highs in targets (136), receptions (95) and yards (1,096). On the other hand, he set a career low in Y/R (11.5) and his three touchdowns were a career low outside of his rookie season. Getting off to a great start, Anderson had 74-plus yards in six of his first seven games with all three of his 100-yard games during that span. Beyond that point, however, he reached 74 yards in only two of nine games and averaged nearly 40 YPG less over the final nine-game span (91.4 YPG in first 7G vs. 50.7 in final 9G). The free-agency departure of Curtis Samuel could help Anderson improve upon his 2020 numbers.

Terrace Marshall: Over the past two seasons at LSU (including 2019 with Panthers OC Joe Brady), Marshall scored a total of 23 touchdowns. Injury concerns led to his slide to the bottom of Round 2, but he will start immediately in three-wide sets with D.J. Moore and Anderson and is a high-upside, late-round target in fantasy drafts.

TIGHT ENDS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Dan Arnold30.33662.800068.55
Ian Thomas7.884.8100018.38
Tommy Tremble3.937.90.40008.14
Colin Thompson111.20.10002.22

Dan Arnold: Arnold easily set career highs in Arizona in 2020 with 31 catches for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Joe Brady has familiarity with Arnold going back to their time together with the Saints and he immediately becomes the team's top pass-catching tight end, but it's possible he fails to duplicate last year's numbers.

Ian Thomas: With Greg Olsen in Seattle last season, Thomas failed to deliver on his sleeper appeal. While he led the team's tight ends in receiving, Thomas had only 20 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown over a full 16-game season in 2020.

Tommy Tremble: Due to his ability as a run blocker, Tremble should earn plenty of snaps as a rookie. Although his receiving opportunities in South Bend were limited, he has the athleticism to eventually become more involved as a receiver at the NFL level although that won't happen in 2021.
