Carolina Panthers 2023 Fantasy Football Projections

Bryce Young: It is no surprise that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft will be the Week 1 starter, but his dynasty outlook vastly outweighs his fantasy value in redraft leagues. Ups and downs should be expected for any rookie, but Young is always composed, processes information quickly and thrives when extending and making plays outside of structure.

Miles Sanders: Sanders set career highs in rushing last season with 259 carries for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. Through four NFL seasons, he has averaged 5.02 yards per carry running behind the league's best offensive line. With Jalen Hurts under center, Sanders (and Philly's running backs) weren't targeted often, but he had 50 receptions as a rookie in 2019. There's a good chance that he's more involved as a receiver than he was over the past several seasons.

Chuba Hubbard: Sanders played a full 17-game slate last season, but he played only 12 games in each of the previous two seasons. While Sanders (groin) says he'll be ready to go for Week 1, Hubbard would likely handle the largest share of the workload if Sanders were to miss any time this season.

Adam Thielen: After spending his entire career in Minnesota, Thielen begins anew with the Panthers and a rookie quarterback in his age-33 season. Thielen has has a minimum of 67 catches and 710 yards in each of the past three seasons, and he's one of five players with at least 30 touchdowns during that span, per Stathead.

D.J. Chark: Chark will compete with Adam Thielen, Terrace Marshall Jr. and Jonathan Mingo for targets, which means that Chark has a real shot to lead the team's wide receivers in fantasy points in 2023. Chark has appeared in only 28 games over the past three seasons, but he had a breakout age-23 season before that with 73/1,008/8 in 2019. Chark (hamstring) says he's optimistic about his Week 1 availability.

Jonathan Mingo: The Panthers used a top-40 pick on Mingo, a big receiver (6-2, 220) who had a strong showing at the combine (4.46 40-yard dash, 39.5" vertical jump and 22 bench press reps). While the college production wasn't elite as a four-year starter, he's a good route runner who uses his size and strong hands to win in contested-catch situations.

Hayden Hurst: Hurst is playing for his fourth team since being drafted in the first round in 2018. While he has missed four games in back-to-back seasons, he averaged a career high in receptions per game (4.0) last season with the Bengals. Hurst has averaged only 8.1 yards per reception over the past two seasons, but he has the potential to post comparable numbers to last year (52/414/2).

Jared Goff: Goff isn't much more than a back-end QB2 in two-QB or Super Flex formats, but he has a better offensive supporting cast around him this year when everyone is healthy. Not only did the Lions sign D.J. Chark to a one-year deal in free agency, but they traded up to draft this year's biggest home run threat (Jameson Williams) as well.

D'Andre Swift: Swift has played exactly 13 games in each of his first two seasons, but he offers plenty of upside if he can stay healthy given his versatile skill set. Despite missing four games in 2021, Swift had 62 catches for 452 yards and two touchdowns in addition to a 151/617/5 rushing line. Swift was 12th in half-PPR fantasy points per game in 2021.

Jamaal Williams: Like Swift, Williams missed four games in 2021 but set a career high in rushing yards (601) and tied a career high in rush attempts (153). While his targets per game (2.15) was near a career low, he set a career high in catch rate (92.9%) and finished with 2.0 receptions per game, his career average.

Amon-Ra St. Brown: St. Brown was highly productive as a fourth-round rookie, as the former USC Trojan finished 2021 with 90 catches (T-15th) for 912 yards (30th) and five touchdowns on 119 targets (26th). With the Lions dealing with injuries to other pass catchers down the stretch, St. Brown converted 67 targets into 51 receptions for 560 yards and scored all five of his touchdowns over the final six games of the season. Only Cooper Kupp scored more fantasy points than St. Brown over that span.

D.J. Chark: Signing a one-year deal to play for the Lions, Chark missed nearly all of the 2021 season, but the former Jag has a 1,000-yard season (73/1,008/8 in 2019) under his belt. He's developed good chemistry with Jared Goff leading into the season.

Jameson Williams: If it weren't for a torn ACL at the end of the season, Williams could have possibly been the first receiver off the board in the 2022 NFL Draft. With his elite speed and quickness, Williams is a threat to take it to the house any time he touches the ball. Williams begins the season on the reserve/NFI list, which means he'll miss a minimum of four games, but his rehab is going well and "could accelerate" his return from what was initially expected.

T.J. Hockenson: Hockenson missed five games last season, but he set per-game career highs in receptions (5.1) and yards (48.6) as well as catch rate (72.6%). Given the additions to the receiving corps (D.J. Chark and Jameson Williams), Jared Goff won't need to rely as heavily on Hockenson this year.

Trevor Lawrence: The top overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence has the arm talent to make any throw and is a plus athlete with the ability to extend plays or be used on designed runs. With a top-10 fantasy strength of schedule and the likelihood to trail in most of their games, Lawrence is a high-end QB2 with upside heading into his rookie campaign.

Travis Etienne: A two-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Etienne surprised many by returning to school for another season. As impressive as James Robinson was as a rookie (UDFA), Etienne's talent and (first-round) draft pedigree make him the favorite to emerge as the team's primary back sooner than later even if Robinson gets more touches in Week 1.

James Robinson: Robinson had modest performances in Weeks 14 and 15 and missed Weeks 16 and 17. Before that, however, he was the favorite for 2020 Fantasy Football MVP (if such an award actually existed).

As lead back of a one-win team, the UDFA was fourth in half-PPR fantasy points, fourth in YFS and third in touches through Week 13. Robinson has shown he can be highly effective as the featured back, but a new coaching staff and a first-round running back joining the mix could lead to a diminishing role as the season progresses.

Laviska Shenault: Shenault Jr. played only 10 snaps in Week 9 and then missed the following two games. Outside of those three games, the rookie had a minimum of three receptions in every game. Over the final five games of the season, he had 25 catches (on 36 targets) for 246 yards and four touchdowns and added six carries for 31 yards and he was the WR16 (half-PPR) over that stretch.

D.J. Chark: Chark had 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019, but he missed three games in 2020 and averaged 12.9 yards per game less he did in 2019. There is the potential for a bounce-back in his age-25 season with improved quarterback play, but missed time (broken finger, surgery) will slow his ability to build chemistry with Trevor Lawrence. Chark is expected to be ready for Week 1.

Marvin Jones: Jones averaged 61.1 YPG -- a three-year high -- last season and has averaged no less than 56.4 YPG over the past five years. In addition, he has scored nine touchdowns in three of his past four seasons. While Chark is a bounce-back candidate and Shenault Jr. is a breakout candidate, Jones is a solid depth option later in drafts.

James O'Shaughnessy: With Tyler Eifert no longer on the roster, O'Shaughnessy tops the depth chart entering 2021. At a minimum, he should build upon his 28/262/0 receiving line and there is some deep sleeper appeal in TE-premium leagues.

Week 10 Fantasy Football WR Start'em, Sit'em

The decision on which player to start, or sit, largely comes down to the options on your roster (and/or possibly the players available on your league's waiver wire).

As an example, Jerry Jeudy is listed below as a "start" for Week 10. And I'd certainly be comfortable going into Week 10 with him as one of my starting wide receivers.

Then again, Jeudy may be a "sit" for your team.

In other words, if you own Davante Adams, Terry McLaurin and Jeudy and only start two wide receivers, you should start Adams and McLaurin and, in turn, bench Jeudy.

For a more direct answer on whether we would start Player X over Player Y, check our Week 10 Fantasy Football Rankings. Instead of making those direct comparisons, the goal here is to highlight players that we like, or dislike, for the week.

Week 10 Fantasy Football WR Start'em

Brandin Cooks, Houston Texans (at CLE)

While he had fewer than 25 yards and finished as the WR80 or worse in three of his first four games, the past four weeks have gone much differently than the first four weeks for Cooks. He has a minimum of 60 yards and nine targets in all four games over that stretch. During that four-game span, Cooks has a total of 27 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns on 39 targets. In addition, Cooks (39) has nine more targets than Will Fuller (30) in Houston's past four games.

The Cleveland Browns offer both Cooks and Fuller a favorable matchup as they have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers this season.

Tyler Boyd, Cincinnati Bengals (at PIT)

When it comes to passing volume, only the Cowboys (43.3/G) -- on bye this week -- have thrown more pass attempts than the Bengals (41.4/G) this season. The Bengals have a solid trio of receivers in Boyd, Tee Higgins and A.J. Green for rookie Joe Burrow and Boyd leads the team in receptions (54), targets (68), yards (584) and touchdowns (three).

Boyd has a minimum of five targets every week, an average of 8.5 per game and since Week 3, he has a minimum 20.0% target share in every game. That volume has helped Boyd to finish as a top-15 fantasy wide receiver in four of his past seven games.

D.J. Chark, Jacksonville Jaguars (at GB)

Before the bye, Chark had a total of 87 scoreless yards combined in three games. Coming out of the bye, however, Chark had a massive game with seven catches for 146 yards and a touchdown in Week 9. Rookie Jake Luton will draw another start and the Green Bay Packers will be without Jaire Alexander (concussion), who has graded out as PFF's top-rated corner this season. Given that the Packers are two-TD favorites, garbage time could come early and force the Jaguars to into more pass attempts.

Jerry Jeudy, Denver Broncos (at LV)

Jeudy began with the season with several solid, but not spectacular, performances -- 55 to 62 yards in each of his first four games. While he had a couple of very modest outings in Week 6 (32 yards) and Week 7 (20 yards), the targets and production have been more plentiful over the past two weeks. With much higher volume (24 targets) over the past two weeks, Jeudy's catch rate is only 45.8%, but the first-round rookie has a total of 11 catches for 198 yards and a touchdown.

Week 10 Fantasy Football WR Sit'em

A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (at PIT)

In the three games prior to the bye, Green had 8/96 (11 targets), 7/82 (13 targets) and 2/19 (five targets), respectively. The good news is that his two best games of the season occurred within his past three games. That said, Green has converted fewer than half of his targets (49.2%, 31-of-63) from Burrow and he has yet to score a touchdown this season.

As noted above, I'd prefer to start Boyd over Green and I'd also prefer rookie Tee Higgins. Among the leaders in fantasy points scored (half-PPR scoring), Boyd (WR15) and Higgins (WR30) have vastly outperformed Green (WR75) this season.

Marvin Jones, Detroit Lions (vs. WAS)

Even though Kenny Golladay (hip) is out for Week 10, I'd keep Jones on my bench. On a positive note, Jones has scored three touchdowns in his past two games, but he also has 43 or fewer yards in four of his past five games.

In addition, no team has limited opposing wide receivers to fewer fantasy points this season than Washington. Throughout the entire season, Washington has allowed only two top-24 weekly wide receivers -- DeAndre Hopkins (WR9, Week 2) and Robert Woods (WR21, Week 5) -- and no receiver has more than 86 receiving yards against them this season.

Antonio Brown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (at CAR)

Ultimately, I wouldn't be surprised if Brown outscores all other Tampa Bay receivers the rest of the season. In his first game as a Buccaneer, however, Brown had three catches for 31 yards on five targets and there are a lot of mouths to feed in this passing offense. While the Panthers have allowed several big games to receivers including Mike Evans (7/104/1) in Week 2, the team has allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing wide receivers this season. This week, I have AB ranked as a WR4.

While the Jags are the early favorites to win the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes, there is little competition for Minshew in 2020. As a rookie, Minshew threw for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. An underrated aspect of his game is his rushing ability as Minshew averaged 5.1 YPC and gained 344 yards on the ground. Only four quarterbacks -- Lamar Jackson (1,206), Kyler Murray (544), Josh Allen (510) and Deshaun Watson (413) -- rushed for more.

Reunited with Jay Gruden, Thompson has at least 35 receptions in five consecutive seasons, but he has also missed five or more games in each of the past three years. Chark broke out in 2019 with 73 catches (on 118 targets) for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns. With a new offensive coordinator (Jay Gruden), can Shark build upon his 2019 breakout in his age-24 season?

With exactly 101 targets and 66 receptions in back-to-back seasons, Westbrook has averaged a consistent-but-mediocre 44.0 YPG (2019) and 44.8 YPG (2018) as well. Westbrook was the WR45 (half-PPR scoring) last year and is a low-upside option with a little more appeal in PPR formats compared to non-PPR leagues.

After playing just 14 games in the previous three seasons combined, Eifert played a full 16-game slate in 2019 and finished with 43 catches for 436 yards and three touchdowns. If he is able to put together another healthy season (granted, a big if), Eifert has the potential to flirt with top-12 numbers in Jay Gruden's TE-friendly offense.
