QUARTERBACKS

PlayerAtt.Comp.YardsTDINTRushYardsTDPoints
Bryce Young523.8340.53692.82213.6253214.71.33237.92
Andy Dalton33.421.8232.11.40.96.821.10.1416.03

Bryce Young: It was no surprise that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft was named the Week 1 starter early in the process. While ups and downs should be expected for any rookie, Young is always composed, processes information quickly and thrives when extending and making plays outside of structure.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Miles Sanders209.7964.65.6632.6243.31.4179.45
Chuba Hubbard112.84852.9322.6166.81100.06
Raheem Blackshear49.6203.41.4114.5107.90.650.44
Spencer Brown938.30.231.49.80.17.49

Miles Sanders: Sanders set career highs in rushing last season with 259 carries for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. Through four NFL seasons, he has averaged 5.02 yards per carry running behind the league's best offensive line. With Jalen Hurts under center, Sanders (and Philly's running backs) weren't targeted often, but he had 50 receptions as a rookie in 2022. There's a good chance that he's more involved as a receiver than he was over the past several seasons. Sanders is dealing with a hamstring injury, but Frank Reich says he thinks that Sanders is "getting close."

Chuba Hubbard: Sanders played a full 17-game last season, but he's currently dealing with a hamstring injury and appeared in only 12 games in both 2020 and 2021. While Sanders should be ready to go before Week 1, Hubbard would likely handle the largest share of the workload in the event that Sanders were to miss any time, and he averaged 4.9 YPC last season.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
D.J. Chark486773.7000113.9
Adam Thielen54.3596.63.9000110.21

Laviska Shenault Jr.23.5253.21.510.155.60.5154.69
Shi Smith7.192.20.600016.37

D.J. Chark: Chark will compete with Adam Thielen, Terrace Marshall Jr. and Jonathan Mingo for targets, which means that Chark has a real shot to lead the team's wide receivers in fantasy points in 2023. Chark has appeared in only 28 games over the past three seasons, but he had a breakout age-23 season before that with 73/1,008/8 in 2019.

Adam Thielen: After spending his entire career in Minnesota, Thielen begins anew with the Panthers and a rookie quarterback in his age-33 season. Thielen has has a minimum of 67 catches and 710 yards in each of the past three seasons, and he's one of five players with at least 30 touchdowns during that span, per Stathead.

Jonathan Mingo: The Panthers used a top-40 pick on Mingo, a big receiver (6-2, 220) who had a strong showing at the combine (4.46 40-yard dash, 39.5" vertical jump and 22 bench press reps). While the college production wasn't elite as a four-year starter, he's a good route runner who uses his size and strong hands to win in contested-catch situations.

TIGHT ENDS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Hayden Hurst51.6510.23.100095.42
Ian Thomas13.6135.40.900025.74
Tommy Tremble12.7129.50.900024.7
Stephen Sullivan2.425.50.20004.95

Hayden Hurst: Hurst has missed four games and averaged only 8.5 yards per reception (or less) in back-to-back seasons, but he averaged a career-high four receptions per game last season. Given the relative uncertainty at wide receiver, it's possible that Hurst comes close to his averages from last year.

Bryce Young: Young is obviously Carolina's quarterback of the future, but it was nice to see Frank Reich name him the starter (over Andy Dalton) early in the process. Sam Darnold2414.4158.40.840.773.314.90.1310.43

Baker Mayfield: Two seasons ago, Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Things were much different last year, as Mayfield tried to play through injuries that should have kept him on the sidelines, but the former No. 1 overall pick gets a chance at a fresh start in Carolina.

RUNNING BACKS

Giovanni Ricci0.900.021.18.501.52

Christian McCaffrey: McCaffrey has played just 10 games over the past two seasons combined. In those 10 games, he has averaged 115.9 scrimmage yards, 5.4 receptions and 0.8 touchdowns per game. Before that, CMC led the NFL in scrimmage yards (2,392), touchdowns (19) and touches (403) in 2019 and became the third player in NFL history to reach the 1,000-yard rushing and receiving milestones in the same season. If his health cooperates, he has as high of a ceiling and floor as any running back including Jonathan Taylor.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Shi Smith0.910.70.10002.12

D.J. Moore: Moore set career highs in both targets (163) and receptions (93) in 2021. While he's been limited to a degree by poor quarterback play, he has exceeded the 1,100-yard mark in three consecutive seasons and I have him projected to finish above that mark in 2022 as well.

Robbie Anderson: Anderson's second season with the Panthers was a huge disappointment as his production plummeted. He finished with 53/519/5 in 17 games in 2021 after posting a 95/1,096/3 line in 2020. Baker Mayfield should help the offense become more efficient than it was in 2021, but there a number of receivers that could cut into Anderson's snaps behind D.J. Moore, the team's unquestioned WR1.

Tommy Tremble: Carolina's tight ends posted modest numbers in 2021, but Tremble led the position group in fantasy production as a rookie. Although he's off the radar in single-TE leagues, the second-year tight end should post even better numbers in 2022 and once again lead the team's position group in production.

Things were much different last year, as Mayfield tried to play through injuries that should have kept him on the sidelines, but now the former No. 1 overall pick gets a chance at a fresh start in Carolina. While Matt Rhule hasn't declared the team's regular-season starter, it appears to be his "job to lose."

Sam Darnold: Although still young (recently turned 25), Darnold's career stats through four seasons are not good -- 59.8%, 3.3 TD%, 3.2 INT% and 6.5 Y/A. Even if there really were an open quarterback competition with Mayfield, it's unlikely that Darnold would come out on top.

Matt Corral: Corral slipped to the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but he throws with a quick release and has the mobility to extend and make plays. It's unlikely that Corral will make starts as a rookie, barring injury, until the Panthers are out of playoff contention.

Fantasy Football WR Waiver Wire Week 2

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be rostered in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some wide receiver waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 2 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by our preference to add.]

1. Rondale Moore, 4. Christian Kirk, Arizona Cardinals (27%, 14%)

Arizona's offense was clicking on all cylinders in Week 1 as Moore ended the day with four catches for 68 yards on five targets. On the other hand, it was a disappointing debut for A.J. Green (2/25 on six targets).

While Christian Kirk (5/70/2) had a monster game, we've seen up-and-down performances from him. During a five-game stretch from Weeks 4 to 9 last season, Kirk totaled 20/343/6 (17.15 Y/R) as he performed as fantasy's WR7 during that stretch. He finished as the WR50 (or worse) in eight of his other nine games last season.

If I had to rank the non-DeAndre Hopkins receivers in Arizona for the rest of the way, I'd rank them Moore (1A), Kirk (1B) and Green (distant second). On a positive note for Green, he played 55 snaps (80%), which was significantly more than Kirk (39, 57%) and Moore (20,29%).

2. Terrace Marshall Jr., Carolina Panthers (20%)

With Christian McCaffrey missing almost all of 2020, the Panthers had three highly productive wide receivers. In fact, all three of Robby Anderson (WR22), D.J. Moore (WR23) and Curtis Samuel (WR25) finished as top-25 wide receivers in half-PPR scoring.

That likely won't happen in 2021, especially given that CMC is healthy (knock on wood), but it's conceivable that Marshall outperforms his ADP and returns flex value for his fantasy managers. Longer-term injury concerns may have led to a draft slide to the end of Round 2, but many viewed Marshall as a first-round talent and he joined the team having familiarity with Joe Brady's offense from their days at LSU. Marshall had just three catches for 26 yards on six targets in his debut, but I expect better things to come from the promising rookie.

3. Tim Patrick, Denver Broncos (2%)

Jerry Jeudy (high-ankle sprain) is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which is obviously disappointing for those that roster a receiver that seemed destined to breakout in 2021. With the injury, however, it opens up opportunities for the team's other pass catchers.

While K.J. Hamler may offer more weekly upside, Patrick is the more consistent option. Patrick had a relatively quiet breakout season in 2020 as he finished with 51 catches for 742 yards and six touchdowns. In fact, Patrick (WR41) scored more fantasy points than teammate Jeudy (WR44) in 2020.

4. Kirk (see above)

5. Sterling Shepard, New York Giants (39%)

Shepard was one of Week 1's top-performing wide receivers with a 7/113/1 line on nine targets. Kenny Golladay had noted that the offense could take some time to develop chemistry due to injuries, so it wasn't necessarily surprising that Daniel Jones found comfort targeting Shepard as successfully as he did.

Golladay should emerge as the team's No. 1 receiver, but Shepard has some extra short-term value since the Giants have a quick turnaround with a Thursday Night Football matchup against WFT. Not only is Saquon Barkley still at less than full strength, but Evan Engram earned a projected DNP on Monday after sitting out Week 1.

6. K.J. Osborn, Minnesota Vikings (0%)

In an OT shootout against the Bengals, Osborn ended Week 1 with seven catches for 76 yards on nine targets. It was a nearly even three-way split between Adam Thielen (10 targets), Justin Jefferson (nine) and Osborn (nine). That is unlikely to happen very often and the Vikings want to run the ball as much as possible, but they face a couple of offenses -- Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns -- that could force the Vikings to keep their pass attempts high over the next few weeks.

Sam Darnold: While he has missed three-plus games in each of his first three seasons, Darnold gets a fresh start in Carolina. With Teddy Bridgewater in Denver and no high rookie draft pick waiting his turn, Darnold is Carolina's unquestioned starter for the 2021 season. Reunited with Robby Anderson, Darnold has the most-talented group of pass-catchers of his career as he enters his age-24 season. Given that Teddy Bridgewater finished last season as a top-20 fantasy quarterback, Darnold will likely outperform his ADP if he can stay healthy.

Christian McCaffrey: If you drafted McCaffrey first overall in 2020, you likely found little solace that he was fantasy's top-scoring back over the three-week window in which he appeared (Weeks 1, 2 and 9). In those games, however, CMC handled 76 touches including 17 receptions, racked up 374 yards from scrimmage and scored six total touchdowns. All of those numbers were either first or second among running backs in that split timeframe.

Before his lost season due to injury, McCaffrey was nearly an every-snap iron man in 2019. Heading into his age-25 season, he remains the top choice for me in 2021 drafts.

Chuba Hubbard: Hubbard has elite top-end speed, but Carolina's fourth-round pick is in the mix to be the handcuff to one of the league's most versatile do-it-all backs. While Mike Davis was one of the most valuable waiver-wire adds in 2020, Hubbard (or Royce Freeman) will likely have limited touches and fantasy relevance without another McCaffrey injury in 2021.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Robby Anderson83.11002.25.54.218.90.04176.9

Brandon Zylstra5.973.70.600013.92

D.J. Moore: Moore averaged only 6.9 targets per game through his first 10 games, but that number jumped to 9.8 over his final five games. In addition, three of his four 100-yard games occurred over that final five-game stretch. Even though his 55.9% catch rate was a career low, the 23-year-old receiver's ADOT (13.2), Y/R (18.1) and receiving yards (1,193) were all career highs.

Robby Anderson: Year 1 in Carolina was generally a success for Anderson, who set career highs in targets (136), receptions (95) and yards (1,096). On the other hand, he set a career low in Y/R (11.5) and his three touchdowns were a career low outside of his rookie season. Getting off to a great start, Anderson had 74-plus yards in six of his first seven games with all three of his 100-yard games during that span. Beyond that point, however, he reached 74 yards in only two of nine games and averaged nearly 40 YPG less over the final nine-game span (91.4 YPG in first 7G vs. 50.7 in final 9G). The free-agency departure of Curtis Samuel could help Anderson improve upon his 2020 numbers.

Terrace Marshall: Over the past two seasons at LSU (including 2019 with Panthers OC Joe Brady), Marshall scored a total of 23 touchdowns. Injury concerns led to his slide to the bottom of Round 2, but he will start immediately in three-wide sets with D.J. Moore and Anderson and is a high-upside, late-round target in fantasy drafts.

TIGHT ENDS

Dan Arnold30.33662.800068.55
Ian Thomas7.884.8100018.38
Tommy Tremble3.937.90.40008.14
Colin Thompson111.20.10002.22

Dan Arnold: Arnold easily set career highs in Arizona in 2020 with 31 catches for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Joe Brady has familiarity with Arnold going back to their time together with the Saints and he immediately becomes the team's top pass-catching tight end, but it's possible he fails to duplicate last year's numbers.

Ian Thomas: With Greg Olsen in Seattle last season, Thomas failed to deliver on his sleeper appeal. While he led the team's tight ends in receiving, Thomas had only 20 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown over a full 16-game season in 2020.

Tommy Tremble: Due to his ability as a run blocker, Tremble should earn plenty of snaps as a rookie. Although his receiving opportunities in South Bend were limited, he has the athleticism to eventually become more involved as a receiver at the NFL level although that won't happen in 2021.

Given that Teddy Bridgewater finished last season as fantasy's QB18, Darnold will likely outperform his ADP if he can stay healthy.
