QUARTERBACKS

Zach Wilson505.2300.63435.419.713.8933156.81.27211.74
Joe Flacco68.942.7475.42.821.586.213.60.1229.22

Zach Wilson: The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson was a major disappointment as a rookie. The former BYU Cougar completed only 55.6% of his pass attempts, averaged 6.1 yards per attempt and threw more interceptions (11, 2.9%) than touchdowns (nine, 2.3%). On a positive note, the Jets used four picks in the first four rounds of this year's draft on offense. While it would be difficult to be much worse, how much of an improvement will we see from Wilson in his second season?

RUNNING BACKS

Ty Johnson19.884.20.455.8450.320.32
Zonovan Knight10.343.30.242.215.60.19.03

Breece Hall: As the focal point of Iowa State's offense, Hall rushed for 3,044 yards and 41 touchdowns while adding 59 receptions for 482 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons. Hall is a patient runner with outstanding vision and contact balance and he's a reliable receiver out of the backfield. Even if Michael Carter starts the season as the RB1, Hall should earn a larger share of the workload as the season progresses.

Michael Carter: One of the few bright spots in New York's offense last year, Carter turned his 183 touches as a fourth-round rookie into 964 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. Even though Hall has the higher draft pedigree, Carter goes into his second season as the starter and as an undervalued option available many rounds later than Hall in drafts.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Elijah Moore65.6856.54.68.362.30.42154.8

Denzel Mims2.433.20.20005.72
Jeff Smith2.127.40.20004.99

Elijah Moore: Moore missed the final five games of 2021, but he had 34 catches for 459 yards and five touchdowns on 51 targets over his final six games played as a rookie. During that stretch, only Justin Jefferson scored more fantasy points than Moore, who was fifth on a per-game basis over that time period. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt wrote early in camp that "Moore seems to have firmly established himself as this team's No. 1 receiver. He's in line for a big year."

Garrett Wilson: Wilson was my top-ranked receiver prospect in this year's draft class. Wilson has outstanding body control, ball skills and is dynamic after the catch.

Corey Davis: Davis had a breakout season in 2020 (65/984/5) that he parlayed into a three-year deal with the Jets. Missing roughly half of the season and plagued by poor quarterback play, Davis finished with 34/492/4 in nine games in his first season with the Jets. At this point, however, I'd prefer both Moore and Wilson over Davis in fantasy.

C.J. Uzomah29.7318.71.900058.12
Jeremy Ruckert9.497.80.600018.08

Tyler Conklin: Robert Saleh said last month (via NY Post's Brian Costello): "Conk is awesome. He's been fantastic for us. The whole [tight end] group really has been really good for us, but as far as he's concerned, just his ability on third down to create separation and win those one-on-one's and be a run blocker, he's an all-around tight end. He's been a pleasant surprise."

C.J. Uzomah: Uzomah set career highs in receptions (49), yards (493) and touchdowns (five) in his final season with the Bengals. Now with the Jets and in a less-potent offense, it's likely that his production declines year over year even if he leads the tight end group in snaps and production.

With the team using the 36th overall pick on Hall, Carter becomes relegated to a change-of-pace role behind their new featured back, but he'll especially make an impact in the passing game.

New York Jets Week 4 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

Throughout the 2021 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the New York Jets rank in terms of average, best and worst:

  • Average ranking: 31.8 (32nd)
  • Best ranking: 31st (The Athletic)
  • Worst ranking: 32nd (Multiple)

Below you will find a Week 4 roundup for the Jets in our consensus 2021 NFL Power Rankings.

ESPN -- Rank: 32

Zach Wilson is struggling -- big time. He is throwing too many interceptions (seven), and he is taking too many sacks (15). They're not all his fault, but he must do a better job of delivering the ball on time. At times, he appears indecisive, as if he isn't trusting his reads. Look, he is a rookie, and this is to be expected. He knew there would be adversity in this position, and he is getting it all -- and early in the season. The arm talent is there, and he is more physically skilled than people realize, but that doesn't mean anything if you don't know where to go with the ball. Right now, he looks lost. -- Rich Cimini

NFL.com -- Rank: 32

The Jets are 0-3 for the third consecutive season, and it's a bad 0-3. Sunday's shutout loss to the Broncos was filled with penalties, drops, blown assignments and turnovers. The result was a non-competitive performance that reflects badly on new head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, who should start taking some heat for his construction of a Jets team that's lost 17 of 19 games under his stewardship. Zach Wilson was far from good in his third start, but he received virtually no help from Jets teammates who weren't ready for Denver's intensity. In defense of Wilson and the offense, the schedule dealt them three of the best defenses in football to start the season. The Titans should present something of a respite, but nothing can be assumed in Gotham these days.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 32

The offense is so bad right now. Zach Wilson isn't good, but he doesn't really have a chance. It's going to be a long season.

USA Today -- Rank: 32

Never good signs when you become incrementally less competitive at start of a season ... or see your rookie QB picked off seven times and sacked 15 in his first three NFL starts.

The Athletic -- Rank: 31

Surprise! We were sure by now that we'd have something positive to say about the Jets. New coach, new culture, new quarterback, yadda yadda yadda. And yet, after three weeks, we're alarmed to say there is hardly a single redeeming quality about this Jets team, and certainly none about the offense. We didn't think it was possible to get worse than the Adam Gase-Sam Darnold disaster of 2020, but here we are.

New York Jets Week 2 NFL Power Rankings Roundup

Throughout the 2021 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the New York Jets rank in terms of average, best and worst:

  • Average ranking: 30.0 (30th)
  • Best ranking: 28th (USA Today)
  • Worst ranking: 31st (Multiple)

Below you will find a Week 2 roundup for the Jets in our consensus 2021 NFL Power Rankings.

ESPN -- Rank: 31

Top rookie: QB Zach Wilson

Wilson rallied from a shaky start and led two scoring drives in the second half to keep the Jets competitive in a 19-14 loss at the Panthers. He completed 20-of-37 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It was a gritty, if not clean, performance. He held the ball too long at times, contributing to six sacks, but displayed the arm strength and improvisational skill that made the Jets fall in love with him during the pre-draft process. The Jets dressed nine rookies in Week 1 -- Wilson was clearly the best. -- Rich Cimini

NFL.com -- Rank: 30

Zach Wilson showed toughness, resiliency and plenty of talent in the second half of the Jets' 19-14 loss to the Panthers, but the heralded rookie won't make it through the season if New York can't get its offensive line to play at a competitive level. The unit struggled mightily against the Panthers, allowing six sacks and 10 hits on Wilson, who was scrambling for his life for most of the afternoon. The news got worse in the third quarter, when left tackle Mekhi Becton went out with a knee injury. Becton might have dodged a season-ending setback, but an already-beleaguered front five will be without its most essential piece for at least a month, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 31

It took them a while to get Zach Wilson going, but he did some good things late. The good news is they hung around and made it interesting late, which is progress.

USA Today -- Rank: 28

Darnold's NFL debut (Sept. 10, 2018) marked the NYJ's last win in September. His Panthers debut marked the Jets' 10th consecutive defeat in the month.

The Athletic -- Rank: 30

Overreaction: The defense will be improved, but 80 net yards off the first nine possessions? It's encouraging to see two touchdowns late, and a promising debut for Zach Wilson. The rest of the rookies? Second-round pick Elijah Moore had minus-3 yards on four targets, and fourth-round running back Michael Carter had 6 yards on four carries. Only three of 14 losses last year were by seven points or less, so at least there's that. -- Auman

Reality check: Yeah, this rebuild is going to be slow and painful. -- Jones

Zach Wilson: Selected second overall in the 2021 draft, Wilson may be off the redraft radar outside of two-QB leagues, but his arm talent, mobility and improvisational skills could lead to some streaming potential as a rookie. In addition, Wilson may often find himself in a game script-positive situation for his weekly fantasy outlook. Meanwhile, Robert Saleh has described his preparation and study habits as being "light years ahead of normal rookies."

Michael Carter: The Jets figure to employ a running back by committee approach and that could frustrate fantasy managers that roster Carter, who should be the 1(a) of that RBBC. The rookie out of UNC averaged 8.0 YPC as a senior and finished his collegiate career with 82 receptions.

Tevin Coleman: Injuries have limited Coleman during his two seasons with the 49ers as he has played only 36% and 6% of the offensive snaps in 2019 and 2020, respectively. That said, he brings with him knowledge of the system and familiarity with the coaches that Robert Saleh brought with him from San Francisco.

Corey Davis: Davis had a career-best season in 2020 (65/984/5, 15.1 Y/R). Transitioning to a new offense with a new coaching staff and a rookie quarterback, Davis may be the team's WR1, but it will likely be difficult to improve upon last year's success.

Elijah Moore: Mostly aligning in the slot at Mississippi, Moore, the 34th-overall pick this year, broke A.J. Brown's single-season reception record last season. It would make sense for the Jets to part ways with Jamison Crowder, but Moore has the potential to excel both inside and out.

Jamison Crowder: With the Jets drafting Moore, many expected to the Jets to part ways with Crowder, who has since taken a massive pay cut. In his two seasons with the Jets, Crowder has averaged a receiving line of 4.9/54.7/0.43 on 7.54 targets per game.

New York Jets 2021 NFL Mock Draft Roundup 9.0

Throughout the year and leading up to the 2021 NFL draft, we will update our New York Jets Mock Draft Roundup showing picks for the New York Jets from several prominent sites and draft analysts.

For a more inclusive lists of mock drafts for the New York Jets, check out our 2021 New York Jets Mock Draft Database.

The following are picks in recent mock drafts for the Jets:

EDSFootball - Hanson (4/15)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Although Sam Darnold didn't show that he was the franchise quarterback the team hoped he'd develop into when they selected him with the No. 3 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, he also wasn't put in a position to succeed given the poor coaching and supporting cast. By trading him to the Panthers, the team resets and is absolutely flush with draft picks over the next two years to put the next quarterback in a position to flourish. In the 2021 and 2022 drafts combined, the Jets have 10 picks in the first three rounds -- four first-rounders, three second-rounders and three third-rounders.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, former NFL quarterback and current analyst Chris Simms said, "I'm blown away by Zach Wilson, Dan. You know I look at it, and look at, and say this is an Aaron Rodgers, a Patrick Mahomes, Brett Favre-ish type guy." On top of lofty comparisons to HOF/MVP-caliber quarterbacks, Simms actually ranks Wilson ahead of Lawrence, but the BYU product's meteoric rise up draft boards this draft cycle has been similar to that of Joe Burrow in last year's draft.

If Lawrence weren't in this draft class, Wilson would be worthy of the No. 1 overall pick.

23. Najee Harris, RB, Alabama

The Jets signed Tevin Coleman to a one-year deal, but they figure to be one of the few teams that could consider drafting a running back in the first round. By adding a talented do-it-all type of back like Harris, it would help the Jets take some pressure off of Zach Wilson. The all-time career rushing leader in Alabama history, Harris rushed for 1,466 yards and 26 touchdowns and added 43 receptions for 425 yards and four more scores last season.

Fox Sports - Rang (4/15)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Trading Sam Darnold guarantees what we've been projecting for months -- The Jets are resetting the quarterback position. With all due respect to the bigger, speedier Lawrence, Wilson is the most accurate passer in this class and the perfect building block for defensive-minded coach Robert Saleh to build around.

23. Alijah Vera-Tucker, IOL, USC

The investment in Zach Wilson at No. 2 overall won't matter if the Jets don't shore up the interior of their offensive line. GM Joe Douglas attempted to do so in free agency, but missed out on pricey free-agent guard Joe Thuney. Vera-Tucker would be a younger, cheaper and similarly gifted consolation prize.

CBS Sports - Jones (4/14)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

The Jets have been infatuated with Wilson for months and the whole league has known it. Trading away Sam Darnold last week solidified this pick, which will define Joe Douglas' tenure as GM.

23. Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State

Douglas hit a home run last year with Mekhi Becton and saw how well Zach Wilson operated behind a stout BYU line. Jenkins can come in and immediately compete with George Fant for the right tackle position, and he has experience playing guard, too.

Washington Post - Clayton (4/14)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

As soon as General Manager Joe Douglas finished observing the workouts of this year's quarterbacks, he appeared to firm up Wilson as his choice. Soon after, he traded Darnold, the former third overall pick, to Carolina.

23. Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern

The Jets added two defensive ends, a defensive tackle, a linebacker and a safety in free agency, but nothing at cornerback. Newsome would fit in nicely in Coach Robert Saleh's defense, but the Jets might need to trade up to get him.

The Athletic - Brugler (4/14)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Since my first mock draft back in November, Wilson has been the projected pick at No. 2 and nothing has happened to change that belief. The first two picks are locked in.

23. Azeez Ojulari, EDGE, Georgia

The Jets upgraded the pass rush with Carl Lawson in free agency, but there is still work to do. At only 20 years old, Ojulari led the SEC in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles due to his get-off, length and instincts. And it is clear he has yet to play his best football.

Yahoo Sports! - Edholm (4/13)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

The feeling heading into Wilson's pro day on March 26 was that Wilson was the favorite here. Nothing changed after that. It feels nearly certain now.

23. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame

Perhaps there are more pressing needs, but GM Joe Douglas is a talent hound who knows a bargain when he sees one. JOK would work well as a weakside linebacker (or as a big safety) in the new defensive system and could develop into a playmaker like the ones new head coach Robert Saleh had in San Francisco with Kwon Alexander and Dre Greenlaw.

ESPN - Kiper (4/13)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

I said last month that I was 50-50 on whether the Jets should keep Sam Darnold or take a quarterback here, and general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh made their decision last week. Darnold is off to Carolina, and so this pick is clearly going to be a quarterback. I have Ohio State's Justin Fields just ahead of Wilson in my rankings, but Wilson is the name I've consistently heard for New York. He can be a star with the right talent around him, but the Jets have to add another pass-catcher at some point, even after adding Corey Davis and Keelan Cole Sr. in free agency.

23. Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern

The Jets are a tough team to predict, and their defense could use an overhaul; you know new coach Robert Saleh wants a chance to reshape the side of the ball he coaches with a prime pick. Newsome has been a riser over the past month; his 2020 tape is phenomenal, and he had a great pro day workout. He fits well with what Saleh wants in his corners. Newsome is the last of four cornerbacks who I think are likely to go in Round 1.

NFL.com - Schrager (4/8)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

In the end, I think Wilson will be the guy. His 2020 campaign numbers were eye-popping, but it's his toughness and fearlessness over the course of his entire college career that really impresses folks around the league.

23. Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue

Moore is a beast and a nightmare to tackle after the catch. He's neither a burner nor a huge physical specimen, but he fits everything the Jets are looking to be. Think Deebo Samuel, with his ability to carry the ball, catch the ball and generally be a DC's headache week in and week out.

New York Jets 2021 NFL Mock Draft Roundup 8.0

Throughout the year and leading up to the 2021 NFL draft, we will update our New York Jets Mock Draft Roundup showing picks for the New York Jets from several prominent sites and draft analysts.

For a more inclusive lists of mock drafts for the New York Jets, check out our 2021 New York Jets Mock Draft Database.

The following are picks in recent mock drafts for the Jets:

EDSFootball - Hanson (4/1)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Enjoying a pre-draft rise similar to that of Joe Burrow last year, Wilson uses his athleticism to make and extend plays and is especially accurate throwing downfield. Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, Chris Simms said, "I'm blown away by Zach Wilson, Dan. You know I look at it, and look at, and say this is an Aaron Rodgers, a Patrick Mahomes, Brett Favre-ish type guy."

While Simms is the outlier in ranking Wilson over Lawrence, one thing is a virtual lock -- Lawrence-Wilson will go 1-2 to kick off the 2021 NFL Draft.

23. Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

If it weren't for the back surgery (and full injury history), it's unlikely that Farley would have been available here. That said, the Jets (if comfortable with the medicals) get an elite corner that fits exactly what new head coach Robert Saleh would like to do on defense. Farley has an ideal combination of size (6-foot-2, 205 pounds), athleticism (sub-4.4 forty) and ball skills (six INTs in two seasons).

ESPN - McShay (4/1)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Could a team move up to No. 2 and send the Jets a package similar to -- if not exceeding -- what the Dolphins got from the 49ers? It's possible. But the Jets could very well move on from Sam Darnold and start fresh with Wilson at quarterback. He fits so well with the modern NFL, showing the ability to make plays on the run, the arm strength to drive the ball vertically and the instincts to tuck and run for big gains when necessary. But similar to the Jags, the Jets have to get Wilson support. They brought in Corey Davis, Keelan Cole Sr. and Tevin Coleman over the past few weeks and have nine total picks to work with.

23. Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

With Wilson being the pick at No. 2, New York now has to help him out. I liked the Jets bringing in Corey Davis and Keelan Cole Sr., but this is another potential spot for Terrace Marshall Jr. or perhaps Ole Miss' Elijah Moore. And don't rule out an offensive tackle like Teven Jenkins (Oklahoma State). I'm going with Etienne, though. He has breakaway speed and can catch passes out of the backfield. The Jets need a true game-changer at running back, and he's exactly that, scoring 78 touchdowns from scrimmage over his time at Clemson.

Baltimore Sun - Doon (3/31)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

General manager Joe Douglas and new coach Robert Saleh get the chance to start fresh with a new quarterback, with 2018 No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold likely leaving in a trade. Having a player like Wilson -- who seemed to lock up the No. 2 spot with an impressive pro day -- on a rookie deal will help New York build a better roster over the next few seasons.

23. Jaelan Phillips, EDGE, Miami (FL)

The addition of Carl Lawson in free agency will help, but the Jets could still use another edge rusher as they build their roster under a defensive-minded coach. Phillips has an unsettling injury history, but was one of the most productive players in the country in 2020 and impressed scouts at his pro day.

EDSFootball - Donahue (3/29)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

His pro day certainly did not hurt his draft status, as one of his throws went viral and had scouts claiming that Wilson is the pick and the draft really begins at pick No. 3. Wilson has seen the biggest rise up draft boards in the past year both due to his "wow" throws but also his accuracy and mobility. His 2020 season justifies the praise he has been receiving as he threw for 33 TDs and only three interceptions while completing 73.5% of his passes.

23. Alijah Vera-Tucker, IOL, USC

One player that may have had their draft stock drop a bit after their pro day measurables was Alijah Vera-Tucker, as his arm length of 32 1/8" will have teams questioning his ability to play offensive tackle full-time at the next level. The Jets, who had the 29th-ranked offensive line last year per PFF, could use an upgrade at pretty much every spot outside of left tackle so they don't mind taking what could now be the best guard in the draft.

San Diego Union Tribune (3/29)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

If the Jets were willing to deal this pick, I'm positive they would have made the deal with the 49ers for the No. 12 overall selection and two future first-rounders. Which means they're locked in on a player and it's likely Wilson. The former Cougar didn't disappoint at his pro day. I expect Sam Darnold to be dealt before the draft.

23. Jaelan Phillips, EDGE, Miami (FL)

If past is prologue, once head coach Robert Saleh has his quarterback situation figured out, he'll focus on building a pass rush. Phillips stepped up in Gregory Rousseau's absence after transferring from UCLA. The former highly-touted recruit is a relentless pass rusher who produced eight sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss in 10 games as a Hurricane.

L.A. Times - Farmer (3/29)

2. Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

In this scenario, the Jets keep Sam Darnold, maybe move Mekhi Becton to the right side, and have stellar young bookend tackles.

23. DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

Having picked up a left tackle at No. 2, the Jets find a player who could be their first 1,000-yard receiver since 2015.

New York Post - Serby (3/27)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

"Hi. It's Matt Rhule here in Carolina."

"Hi. It's Nick Caserio here in Houston."

"Hi. It's George Paton here in Denver."

Sam Darnold was not in attendance at Wilson's Pro Day on Friday. Neither was Corey Davis. But Joe Douglas sure was. Broadway Zach, here we come! Tape don't lie. Time to reset the financial clock at quarterback. Sam, we hardly knew ye.

23. Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

A home-run threat in the open field and a security blanket in the passing game for offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to help the young quarterback, whomever that may be.

The Ringer - Kelly (3/26)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

All signs still point to the Jets taking a quarterback at no. 2, and Wilson remains the clear favorite with just over a month left until the draft. New York will have to figure out what to do with Sam Darnold, but the team made a few smart moves in free agency, signing pass catchers Corey Davis, Keelan Cole, and Tyler Kroft while adding depth to the offensive line in center Dan Feeney. The situation for a rookie passer is getting better.

23. Kwity Paye, EDGE, Michigan

After drafting their quarterback of the future early in the first round, the Jets turn to the defense with their second pick. Paye is explosive and powerful, and would complement New York's burgeoning pass-rushing group led by Quinnen Williams and free-agent addition Carl Lawson.

Newsday - Klopsis (3/26)

2. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

The Jets splurged on offensive help in free agency, signing receivers Corey Davis and Keelan Cole as well as running back Tevin Coleman. The big question remains: Will it be Sam Darnold getting the ball to them, or will it be a rookie quarterback? In this instance, GM Joe Douglas deals Darnold and starts fresh with Zach Wilson, a well-rounded quarterback with a great deep ball, solid mobility and a sixth sense for pressure.

23. Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern

After getting their new quarterback at the top of the draft, the Jets address their biggest need on the defensive side of the ball. Greg Newsome II has the length (6-1, 190 pounds) and fluidity to line up on the boundary, and he's comfortable in both Cover 3 and press-man schemes -- an important trait for Robert Saleh's defense.

Post-Free Agency 2021 NFL Mock Draft

It seems like it happens much more often than it actually does.

In fact, the last time it happened was five years ago and it has only happened a total of seven times since 1970.

The last time that two quarterbacks were selected to start a draft was the 2016 NFL Draft when the Rams and Eagles made Jared Goff and Carson Wentz the top two picks, respectively. (Coincidentally, both were traded this offseason.)

Since 1970, the table below lists the number of consecutive quarterbacks selected to start a given year's draft.

# of QBs# of DraftsPct. of Drafts
0 QBs2651.0%
1 QB2549.0%
2 QBs713.7%
3 QBs23.9%
4 QBs00.0%

* Note: All subsets are included. In other words, there were seven times the draft started QB-QB and of those seven QB-QB starts, two of those actually began QB-QB-QB.

Whether or not Lombardi is right about the specific quarterback (Mac Jones) at No. 3, we know that the 49ers have traded up to draft a QB and we are all but guaranteed to start the 2021 draft with three consecutive quarterbacks for the third time since 1970.

Will this be the first draft ever to start with four consecutive quarterbacks?

NFL Mock Draft - Round 1

1. Jacksonville Jaguars - Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

Over the past decade, no team has won fewer games than the Jaguars (44), but their first No. 1 overall pick in Jacksonville Jaguars draft history coincides with the availability of the best quarterback prospect to enter the league since Andrew Luck. Not only do the Jaguars have the opportunity to draft a franchise quarterback at No. 1, but they have a treasure trove of draft capital (multiple picks in four of the first five rounds) and salary-cap space (league-high per Over the Cap).

2. New York Jets - Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

3. San Francisco 49ers - Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

In my 2021 NFL Mock Draft 5.0, I projected a 49ers trade up so that they wouldn't miss out on one of the top-five quarterbacks. While I projected a trade up to No. 7 to get in front of the Panthers, the 49ers pushed their chips into the middle of the table in a more aggressive jump up to No. 3.

Almost universally, Trevor Lawrence is the QB1. As noted with the Jets pick, Chris Simms is a notable trend-bucker with Zach Wilson as his QB1. Not everyone has Lawrence or Wilson as their QB1, though. Former NFL head coach June Jones ranks (Mac) Jones as his QB1.

Taking the reigns from Tua Tagovailoa, the fifth pick in 2020, Jones really hit the ground running in 2020 as he completed 77.4% of his pass attempts and threw for 4,500 yards (11.2 Y/A), 41 touchdowns and four interceptions last season. While Jones may lack the elite arm strength and athleticism that the other top-four quarterback prospects possess, he makes quick reads and throws with outstanding accuracy and touch.

4. Atlanta Falcons - Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Could we get the first-ever QB-QB-QB-QB start to an NFL Draft? Based on my mock, the answer is yes.

It was an up-and-down season for Fields, but he showed tremendous leadership and toughness in the semifinal win over Clemson as he threw for 385 yards and six touchowns in that game. A two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, the dual-threat quarterback has accounted for 78 total touchdowns -- 63 passing and 15 rushing -- while throwing only nine interceptions over 22 games as Ohio State's starter. Fields, who is from the Atlanta area, would have the opportunity to learn behind Matt Ryan in 2021 and potentially allow the franchise to switch gears in 2022.

5. Cincinnati Bengals - Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

After selecting Joe Burrow first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Bengals would be in an ideal situation if this year's draft begins with an unprecedented selection of four quarterbacks to start the draft. Could they auction this pick off to Carolina or Denver, who may be willing to move up a few spots to draft Trey Lance?

If not, they have their choice of non-QB prospects and I could see them either reuniting Burrow with Ja'Marr Chase or drafting Sewell. Fortunately for the Bengals, deep and talented wide receiver and offensive tackle classes should provide values at both positions for their second-round pick (No. 38).

The Bengals have begun the process of upgrading their offensive line by signing Riley Reiff, but it's only a one-year deal for the 32-year-old tackle and that shouldn't preclude them from selecting an elite prospect like Sewell here. While Sewell opted out of the 2020 season, the 2019 first-team AP All-American was dominant in his true-sophomore campaign and won't turn 21 until October. Sewell is the No. 2 prospect on our 2021 NFL Draft Big Board.

Post-Free Agency San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft Roundup

Throughout the year and leading up to the 2021 NFL draft, we will update our San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft Roundup showing picks for the San Francisco 49ers from several prominent sites and draft analysts.

For a more inclusive lists of mock drafts for the San Francisco 49ers, check out our 2021 San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft Database.

The following are picks in recent mock drafts for the 49ers:

EDSFootball - Donahue (3/23)

12. Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

Farley doesn't have to wait long to hear his name called as the Niners also have a need at corner. At 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, he has almost the same measurables and attributes as Surtain, which is why it is pretty much splitting hairs between the two. Many expect the Niners to be aggressive at the draft and try to move up to grab one of the top quarterbacks, but if they aren't able to do that, they at least are in a spot to take a top-tier CB.

NFL.com - Brooks (3/23)

12. Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

The likely departure of Richard Sherman could prompt John Lynch to prioritize finding a premier cover corner over draft weekend.

The Athletic - Beat Writers (3/23)

12. Kwity Paye, EDGE, Michigan

With tackle Rashawn Slater and quarterback Mac Jones still on the board, this seemed like a good spot for the 49ers to trade back and perhaps take Paye later in the round. There were no takers in this exercise, however. After the 49ers signed Samson Ebukam in free agency, the need for a speed rusher -- like Azeez Ojulari -- is lessened. Paye is a bigger, stronger prospect who can rush from inside on obvious passing downs. He also could fill in if Nick Bosa (knee) is not quite 100 percent early in the season. -- Matt Barrows

ESPN - Kiper (3/22)

12. Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

I'm still not sold on Jimmy Garoppolo as coach Kyle Shanahan's top quarterback going forward, but do the 49ers want to give up the draft capital to trade up to get one of the top four guys? This is a team already without its own third-round pick because of the trade to acquire Trent Williams last year. (It does have a third-round compensatory pick, however.) My feeling is that San Francisco could instead stay put in Round 1 and address its biggest hole with one of the top cornerbacks. Farley is one of the best pure cover corners in this class. Here's a "wow" stat, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information: In 2019 (remember, he opted out of the 2020 season) Farley allowed a completion percentage of 24.4% when he was the targeted defender in coverage, which ranked No. 1 in the FBS. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Farley is having surgery on his back Tuesday, but as of now, I don't think the injury will affect his draft stock.

CBS Sports - Wilson (3/22)

6. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

This is the first time in a long time we've had Zach Willson falling out of the No. 2 pick, but he doesn't stay on the board long; the 49ers trade up from No. 12 to get Wilson, who had an outstanding 2020 campaign and improved his draft stock from second-tier draft prospect to top-10 pick.

PFF - Renner (3/22)

4. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

The 49ers give up a future first and some change to get their guy. The pick not only represents a possible upgrade over Jimmy Garoppolo, but it also clears $23.6 million in cap space from Jimmy G's contract that the 49ers could use after the Trent Williams deal.
