QUARTERBACKS

Jameis Winston518.2335.53860.623.8416.5845.5186.61.82246.2
Taysom Hill57.637.4423.42.361.2759.1319.14.2896.19

Jameis Winston: Perhaps both Winston and Taysom Hill will make starts during the season. Naming Winston as the starter, however, not only puts the better passer under center, but it allows the coaching staff to maximize Hill's versatility, especially given the state of their receiving corps. Two seasons ago in Tampa, Winston led the NFL in both passing yards (5,109) and interceptions thrown (30) so ball security will be critical to keeping the starting gig.

Taysom Hill: Whenever/if he gets the opportunity to start, Hill will flirt with top-12 production. During his four starts last season, he performed as a top-12 fantasy quarterback every week. At a minumum, Hill should be owned in all two-QB and Super Flex leagues.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Alvin Kamara186.5857.97.7479.87244.2269.73

Ty Montgomery6.829.90.1710.6128.50.625.76
Dwayne Washington10.239.80.20.96.406.27

Alvin Kamara: No running back scored more fantasy points in half-PPR formats than Kamara in 2020. The versatile back had exactly 81 receptions in each of his first three NFL seasons and then set a career high (83) in 2020. That said, he was on pace for an even better career-best number before Drew Brees (ribs) missed four weeks. The only three games that Kamara failed to reach three catches came with Taysom Hill under center. That said, Jameis Winston winning the starting job benefits Kamara.

Latavius Murray: Murray may flirt with stand-alone flex value -- especially during bye weeks -- Murray will become an elite play in any game that Kamara misses. In the two games that Kamara missed and Murray was active, Murray had a total of 62 touches, 307 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints

Deonte Harris16.2192.81.16.856.10.1440.43
Lil'Jordan Humphrey0.912.90.10002.34

Michael Thomas: It was an injury-plagued 2020 season for Thomas, who failed to score in seven regular-season appearances. Thomas decided to postpone ankle surgery until June and he begins the season on the PUP list, which means that he'll miss at the least the first six weeks of the season. Drew Brees' retirement and his injury significantly diminishes his fantasy outlook for the upcoming season.

Marquez Callaway: Callaway has generated loads of training camp buzz and then upped the ante in preseason games. He has the potential to be the team's most productive receiver for as long as Michael Thomas (ankle) is out. Either way, he's an upside sleeper pick.

Tre'quan Smith: Smith posted career numbers in receptions (34) and yards (448) in 2020. Even with Brees retiring, Smith should set new career highs, but it's possible/likely that Callaway outperforms him.

TIGHT ENDS

Juwan Johnson20.7265.61.700047.11
Nick Vannett5.253.60.400010.36

Adam Trautman: Set for an expanded role with Jared Cook now in L.A., Trautman is a breakout candidate. Not only does he move to the top of the TE depth chart, but plenty of targets are up for grabs with Michael Thomas starting the season on the PUP list and Emmanuel Sanders now in Buffalo.

Juwan Johnson: Converting from wide receiver to tight end, Johnson has earned glowing reviews this offseason and is poised for an expanded role, giving him some sleeper appeal. In fact, it wouldn't be that big of a surprise if it were Johnson (not Trautman) that turns in better receiving production in 2021.

Jameis Winston: Taysom Hill drew four starts when Drew Brees was sidelined last season. Earlier in the offseason, most expected Winston to be named the starter with Brees decided to hang up his cleats this offseason. Now that training camp is underway, however, the team in the midst of a legitimate quarterback competition.

Perhaps both quarterbacks will make starts during the season, but I believe Winston will begin the season as the starter in part so that New Orleans can maximize Hill's versatility, especially given the state of their receiving corps. Two seasons ago in Tampa, Winston led the NFL in both passing yards (5,109) and interceptions thrown (30) and ball security will be critical to keeping the starting gig (should be named the starter).

That said, he was on pace for an even better career-best number before Drew Brees (ribs) missed four weeks. The only three games that Kamara failed to reach three catches came with Brees sidelined.

If the Saints utilize Taysom Hill as their starter, it would likely cap Kamara's upside and lead to more volatility in his weekly production. In 11 games with Brees, Kamara was a top-10 weekly producer in all but one game last season. In four games with Hill, Kamara posted weekly finishes (half-PPR) of RB25, RB36, RB9 and RB9, respectively.

Latavius Murray: Provided Murray isn't a cap casualty, he flirts with stand-alone flex value -- especially during bye weeks -- when both Kamara and Murray are active. For any week(s) that Kamara may miss, however, Murray becomes a must-start play. In the two games that Kamara missed and Murray was active, Murray had a total of 62 touches, 307 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns.

Ty Montgomery: The Saints have moved Montgomery to receiver. While ESPN lists him as a WR, he is still listed at RB in Yahoo! leagues.

Michael Thomas: It was an injury-plagued 2020 season for Thomas, who failed to score in seven regular-season appearances. Thomas decided to postpone ankle surgery until June and now he's likely to miss the start of the 2021 season. While Thomas appears to be "ahead of schedule," it's unclear how much time he will actually miss.

Before 2020, Thomas had improved every season -- 1,137 yards (2016), 1,245 (2017), 1,405 (2018) and 1,725 (2019). In his last full season (2019), he led the NFL in both receptions (149) and yards (1,725). Drew Brees' retirement and his injury significantly diminishes his fantasy outlook for the upcoming season.

Tre'quan Smith: Smith posted career numbers in receptions (34) and yards (448) in 2020. Even with Brees retiring, Smith should set new career highs with Emmanuel Sanders leaving for Buffalo and Thomas likely to miss the start of the season.

Marquez Callaway: Callaway has generated some training camp buzz and has the potential to be the team's most productive receiver for as long as Michael Thomas (ankle) is out. Either way, he's an upside sleeper pick in the double-digit rounds.

Juwan Johnson: While some sites like Yahoo! still list Johnson as a WR, he has converted to TE and the transition has been going well enough that he has some sleeper appeal.

Jameis Winston: With Drew Brees hanging up the cleats this offseason, the Saints will have a quarterback competition between Winston and Taysom Hill, who started four games last season when Brees missed time. It wouldn't be a surprise, however, if both Winston and Hill made starts in 2021 regardless of which quarterback is named the Week 1 starter.

Two seasons ago in Tampa, Winston led the NFL in both passing yards (5,109) and interceptions thrown (30). While I believe that Sean Payton would like to start Winston to maximize his potential to exploit Hill's versatility, Winston's ball security will be pivotal in his ability to not lose grip of the starting gig (should be named the starter).

Taysom Hill: Whenever/if he gets the opportunity to start, Hill will flirt with top-12 production. In fact, he performed as a top-12 fantasy quarterback in all four of his starts last season.

While Thomas played in the four Taysom Hill starts and had a pair of 100-yard games, both against the Falcons, the most-likely scenario for the 2021 Saints is that Jameis Winston takes over as the team's starter.

QUARTERBACKS

PlayerAtt.Comp.YardsTDINTRushYardsTDPoints
Drew Brees546.1405.54341.529.766.0118.69.30.74286.05
Leading the NFL in completion percentage in each of the past three seasons, Brees posted a career-high 7.1 TD% in 2019 and he has posted a 59-to-nine TD-INT ratio over the past two seasons combined. The team's offseason moves will help Brees, the NFL's all-time leading passer, continue his high level of play into his age-41 season. Not only did the Saints use their first-round pick on the top interior offensive lineman in the draft, but they added Emmanuel Sanders as an upgrade opposite Michael Thomas.
Taysom Hill8.84.4660.350.3535.1193.11.7674.04
More gadget player than quarterback in terms of usage, Jameis Winston would likely step in as the starter if Brees were to miss time this season. That said, the versatile Hill has TE eligibility in ESPN leagues this year. If he were TE-eligible in 2019, he would have finished just outside the top 20 tight ends.

RUNNING BACKS

Alvin Kamara196911.48.3374.5614.63.35222.68
Injury forced him to miss a couple of games in the middle of the season and limited his effectiveness down the stretch, but Kamara still finished as fantasy's RB9 on a per-game basis in 2019. One of the league's most talented receivers out of the backfield, Kamara has exactly 81 catches in each of his three seasons, but he averaged a career-high 5.8 receptions per game last year. Kamara, who scored a touchdown per every 15.35 touches in his first two NFL seasons, could be the benefactor of some positive touchdown regression as that number plummeted to one score per every 42 touches in 2019.
Latavius Murray123.8513.84.0222.8157.30.6895.31
Over a two-game span that Kamara sat out, Murray performed as fantasy's RB1. In those two games, Murray accounted for 307 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns on 62 touches. If Kamara were to miss any time in 2020, Murray would become a must-start play.

Michael Thomas123.21404.58.93000194.03
Thomas has outdone himself every season of his young career -- 92/1,137/9 (2016), 104/1,245/5 (2017), 125/1,405/9 (2018) and 149/1,725/9 (2019). While keeping that streak alive will be challenging, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year makes for an easy choice as fantasy's WR1 heading into 2020.
Emmanuel Sanders59.2751.85.0316.50.01106.07
Traded midseason from the Broncos to 49ers, Sanders played 17 regular-season games and finished with a 66/869/5 line as he averaged more than 50 yards per game with both teams. Joining the Saints on a two-year free-agent deal, Sanders slots in as the team's No. 2 receiver and approaching another 800-yard season would be a reasonable expectation for the 33-year-old receiver even if he's the clear No. 2 behind Thomas.

Jared Cook48.4636.54.8400092.69
In his first season in New Orleans, Cook averaged a career-best 16.4 yards per reception and scored a career-high nine touchdowns on just 43 receptions. The addition of Emmanuel Sanders in free agency bumps Cook down a notch on the targets pecking order and it's unlikely that he maintains his unreal efficiency levels from 2019, but he's a viable TE1 heading into 2020.

Drew Brees522.9379.14235.528.768.3729.823.82.24283.54
Now the NFL's recordholder for passing yards, Brees needs just 20 touchdowns to overtake Peyton Manning for that record as well. Perhaps more impressively, Brees has been a model of consistency with 15 consecutive seasons as fantasy's QB9 or better. The days of Brees slinging it 600-plus times appears over, however, as his pass attempts in 2017 (536, 33.5/G) and 2018 (489, 32.6/G) are the two lowest of his Saints tenure. Could 2019 be the first season that Brees doesn't finish as a top-nine fantasy quarterback as a Saint?

Another top-four season is the expectation based on his ADP and our rankings. Kamara has scored 32 touchdowns -- 22 rushing, nine receiving and one return -- in his 31 NFL games with more than 1,500 scrimmage yards in both seasons.

Before last season (RB32, RB38 in PPR), Murray had finished as a top-20 fantasy running back in standard-scoring formats for three consecutive seasons. While he's unlikely to bounce back to that level of fantasy production, we've seen the Saints offense support to productive running backs with Kamara and Mark Ingram so it's possibly that Murray flirts with back-end RB2 production in standard-scoring formats as a Saint.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Michael Thomas108.51269.58.14000175.79
Three years into his young career, Thomas continues to improve each season -- 92/1,137/9 in 2017, 104/1,245/5 in 2018 and 125/1,405/9 in 2019. Since Thomas has been in the league, there have been 19 100-catch seasons and, of those, only Christian McCaffrey (86.3%, 2018) had a better catch rate than Thomas (85.0%, 2018) over the past three years. The only other wide receivers with 100 catches and catch rate above 70 percent -- Adam Thielen (73.9%, 2018), Larry Fitzgerald (71.3%, 2016) and DeAndre Hopkins (70.6%, 2018).
Ted Ginn Jr.44.7603.54.029.255.20.0990.53
Missing more than half of the season on Injured Reserve, Ginn (knee) still got at least six targets in the seven games (including playoffs) in which he appeared. While Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara are the clear focal points of the Saints' offense, Ginn will have some big weeks as the No. 3, perhaps No. 4, option in the offense.
Tre'quan Smith25367.5300054.75
Smith had a couple of big games (3/111 vs. WAS and 10/157/1 vs. PHI) and a lot of quiet games (23 yards or less in 11 of the other 13). Even if he's more consistent on a weekly basis, it's difficult to trust any receiver not named Thomas in season-long formats.

TIGHT ENDS

Jared Cook50.1663.85.1400097.22
Oakland's passing game had virtually nothing last season and Cook paced the team by leading them in targets (101), receptions (68), yards (896) and touchdowns (six). Setting career highs across the board, Cook finished as fantasy's TE5 last season. Perhaps his year-over-year target share dips, but there is also a major offensive boost with Drew Brees and the Saints.

New Orleans Saints 2019 Fantasy Football Projections

In addition to viewing our 2019 Fantasy Football Projections by position, we will post our preseason projections per team.

Below you will find our 2019 fantasy football projections for the New Orleans Saints.

QUARTERBACKS

Drew Brees544.2394.54380.829.938.7129.823.82.24293.35

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Alvin Kamara216.9986.910.380.97203.64254.33
Even though he has a total of only 476 touches through two seasons, Kamara has finished as a top-four fantasy running back (any scoring format) in both of his first two NFL seasons. Another top-four season is the most likely outcome based on his ADP. Kamara has scored 32 touchdowns -- 22 rushing, nine receiving and one return -- in his 31 NFL games with more than 1,500 scrimmage yards in both seasons.
Latavius Murray137.7564.66.8920.7140.80.21113.14

2018 Fantasy Football WR Waiver-Wire Options Heading Into Week 8

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be owned in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some wide receiver waiver-wire options that I like heading into Week 8 (Yahoo! ownership in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by my preference to add.]

1. Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (49 percent)

Talented enough to earn a larger role in the second half of the season, Godwin had five catches for 59 yards on six targets in Week 7. He now has 50-plus yards and/or a touchdown in all but one game this season. That consistency puts him at WR37 through seven weeks and he has finished as a top-32 receiver in four of six games played.

2. Chris Hogan, New England Patriots (50 percent)

A lot was expected from Hogan entering the season and he's been a disappointment so far. With Julian Edelman back from suspension and Josh Gordon becoming more involved, however, Hogan has posted solid (and two best) games in back-to-back weeks -- 4/78 and 6/63, respectively.

3. Tre'Quan Smith, New Orleans Saints ( percent)

One game after blowing up for 3/111/2, Smith posted a more modest 3/44 line but he had more volume (six targets). With Ted Ginn on Injured Reserve, the third-round rookie should continue to see a high level of volume in as the No. 2 receiver in a Drew Brees-led offense.

4. Christian Kirk, Arizona Cardinals (26 percent)

With three catches for 57 yards in Week 7, Kirk now has more than 50 yards in three consecutive games and in four of his past five. The rookie gets a top-10 matchup against the 49ers in Week 8.

5. Danny Amendola, Miami Dolphins ( percent)

The Dolphins will be without both Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson in Week 8 and Amendola had 6/84/1 on seven targets in Week 7. In fact, he converted 11 Week 6 targets into eight catches for 59 yards. Given the injuries in the receiving corps, Amendola could be looking at double-digit targets in Week 8. Especially in PPR formats, he'll be in the WR3 mix this week.

6. Willie Snead, Baltimore Ravens (42 percent)

Even though he hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 1, Snead has at least seven targets in four consecutive games and has averaged 7.14 targets per game this season. Naturally, the passing-game volume and lack of touchdowns makes Snead a better add in PPR formats. With double-digit PPR points in five of seven games, he's averaged 10.56 PPR points per game this season.
