Philadelphia Eagles 2023 Fantasy Football Projections

Jalen Hurts: Hurts set career bests in passing — 66.5% completion, 8.0 Y/A, 4.8 TD%, 1.2 INT%, and 101.5 passer rating — in 2022. Despite his improvement as a passer, aided by the trade for A.J. Brown last offseason, it's especially the rushing production that makes him an elite fantasy quarterback. Over the past two seasons (30 games), the former Oklahoma (and Alabama) quarterback has rushed 304 times for 1,544 yards and 23 touchdowns. That's an equivalent to 9.75 fantasy points per game (from his rushing stats alone).

D'Andre Swift: There's a good chance that Swift leads Philadelphia's backfield in fantasy production, as long as he stays healthy, but he has missed a minimum of three games every season in his young career. Swift is one of the league's best receiving backs with an average of 3.9 receptions per game in his career. While he'll benefit from playing in a high-powered offense and behind an elite offense line, a drop in target share is likely with Jalen Hurts (165 carries in 2022) under center. Only Chicago's running backs had fewer receptions than Philadelphia's last season.

Rashaad Penny: Through five NFL seasons, Penny has missed nearly as many games (40) as he has played (42). When healthy, however, he has averaged 5.7 yards per carry over his career and an even-better 6.2 YPC over the past two seasons (176/1095/8). Aside from durability concerns, Penny hasn't been a factor in the passing game — 36 career targets in 42 games.

Kenneth Gainwell: The Eagles will employ a committee approach to their backfield, and it's even possible that Gainwell will lead the backfield in fantasy production without factoring in health. Given the durability history of Swift and Penny, however, there is the potential that Gainwell gets even more work than anticipated.

A.J. Brown: Brown shattered previous career highs in targets (145), receptions (88) and yards (1,496) last season and tied his career high in touchdowns (11) in his first season in Philadelphia. Even if he doesn't repeat as a top-five fantasy wide receiver, he's the 1A in this offense to Devonta Smith's 1B, and should be drafted as a top-10 receiver in 2023.

DeVonta Smith: Smith followed up a strong 2021 rookie season (64/916/5) with an even better sophomore campaign (95/1,196/7) despite the addition of A.J. Brown to the receiving corps. Brown was fantasy's WR5 (half-PPR scoring) in 2022, but Smith was also a top-10 performer last season.

Dallas Goedert: Goedert missed five games last season, but he still finished with 55 catches for 702 yards and three touchdowns. His 58.5 YPG average was a career high and he had 60-plus yards in eight of 12 games. In addition, he had a minimum of three catches in all but one game last season.

Philadelphia Eagles Fantasy Football Projections 2022

Jalen Hurts: Hurts threw only 16 touchdowns in 2021, but only one quarterback -- Justin Herbert (12) -- had more QB1 weekly finishes last season than Hurts (11). Hurts was tied for second with Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady and Josh Allen. His elite rushing upside (10 rushing scores in 2021) matters more than his modest passing numbers, but the trade for A.J. Brown to join Devonta Smith and Dallas Goedert should lead to more prolific passing stats in 2022.

Miles Sanders: Sanders has missed at least four games in back-to-back seasons and the hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the past several weeks will give fantasy managers additional pause. Over the past two seasons, however, Sanders has averaged 5.4 yards per carry on 301 rush attempts even though he's been less efficient as a receiver (6.6 Y/R, 62.8% catch rate). As his ADP continues to trend lower, it's creating an opportunity for those that draft/roster Sanders if they are "just being precautious."

A.J. Brown: While he missed four games in 2021, Brown's 105 targets were only one shy of his career high (106, 2020). That said, he posted career lows in receiving yards (869), yards per reception (13.8), yards per target (8.3) and touchdowns (five). Going from one run-centric offense in Tennessee to another in Philadelphia means that he will boost the fantasy value for Jalen Hurts more than the other way around.

DeVonta Smith: Smith had a productive rookie season (64/916/5), but the trade for A.J. Brown limits Smith's upside and potential to make a big second-year leap. Based on talent alone, however, he remains a solid WR3 in fantasy.

Dallas Goedert: Zach Ertz was traded in October, and Goedert had back-to-back 100-yard games in December. If it weren't for the addition of A.J. Brown, who I project to lead the team in receiving, Goedert would be poised for another big leap forward. Even though he's third in line for targets behind Brown and last year's first-round pick Devonta Smith and Philadelphia led the NFL in rushing play percentage (49.87%) last year, Goedert is a mid-tier TE1 in fantasy.

Fantasy Football RB Waiver-Wire Options Heading into Week 9

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be rostered in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some running back waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 9 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

1A/1B. Jeremy McNichols/Adrian Peterson, Tennessee Titans (8%/4%)

It's a devastating blow to any manager that rosters Derrick Henry. The back-to-back rushing champion is likely to miss the rest of the regular season (or at least the fantasy season).

The Titans have signed Adrian Peterson, who averaged a pedestrian 3.9 yards per carry for the Detroit Lions last season. The 36-year-old back could handle the largest share of touches at some point down the stretch. McNichols has only seven carries for 38 yards, but he has 21 receptions for 203 yards and a touchdown on 27 targets.

While neither Peterson nor McNichols will come close to what a healthy Henry would have provided fantasy managers, both should emerge as top 35-40 options the rest of the way.

3. Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles (19%)

With Miles Sanders on IR, Scott had 12 carries for 60 yards (5.0 YPC) and two touchdowns in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions. Scott now has three rushing scores in the past two weeks, but teammate Jordan Howard also had a pair of rushing touchdowns as well.

In fact, the trio of Scott, Jordan and Kenneth Gainwell all played 25%-45% of the team's offensive snaps on Sunday. While Scott had the largest share of the snaps, I will most likely rank him ahead of both Howard and Gainwell in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

4. Carlos Hyde, Jacksonville Jaguars (6%)

Hyde's spot in our waiver-wire rankings are dependent upon James Robinson's status for Week 9. (The injury doesn't appear to be serious.) With Robinson (foot) leaving Sunday's game and not returning, Hyde had nine carries for a pedestrian 32 yards and six receptions for 40 yards on eight targets.

If Robinson isn't available in Week 9, Hyde should once again have 15-plus touches. While Hyde and the offense leave a lot to be desired, the volume will push Hyde into flex range if Robinson can't go.

5. Jaret Patterson, Washington Football Team (2%)

WFT has a bye in Week 9 and difficult matchups in Weeks 10 and 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, respectively. That said, Patterson had a career-high 11 carries for 46 yards on Sunday. Meanwhile, Antonio Gibson handled a season-low eight carries and 11 touches on Sunday.

The bye may come at the perfect time for Gibson, who has battled a shin injury all season. It's also possible that Patterson continues to be a part of a three-headed committee going forward as well.

Jalen Hurts: With three (most likely) first-round picks next year, the Eagles have positioned themselves to potentially draft a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft. Earlier in the offseason, ESPN's Adam Schefter had said to "watch Philadelphia" when it comes to a potential Deshaun Watson trade.

That said, Hurts is squarely in the top-10 mix in fantasy football (barring a Watson trade). After the Eagles benched Carson Wentz, Hurts scored more than 17 fantasy points in all four of his starts and averaged 23.74 per game over that stretch. While he threw for 300-plus yards in two of his four starts, his rushing stats (46/272/3) over that span put him on a Lamar Jackson-esque full-season pace of 184/1,088/12 rushing.

Miles Sanders: Falling well short of 2020 preseason expectations, Sanders missed four games and averaged just 3.1 yards per target after his catch rate dropped from 79.4% as a rookie to 53.8%. Although he averaged 5.3 yards per carry for the season, Sanders failed to exceed 3.8 YPC in four of his final five games. Comments by running backs coach Jamel Singleton suggest that Sanders may not be featured as heavily as he was last year even though he's the clear RB1.

Boston Scott: Likely reading too much into running back practice reps/touches, WIP's Eliot Shorr-Parks tweeted earlier this offseason that "I think Sanders and Scott could end up basically splitting touches this season." If so, he's vastly undervalued, but it does, however, add another concern about Sanders' workload.

Kenneth Gainwell: A talented receiver out of the backfield, it was a bit surprising that Gainwell lasted until the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Like Scott, Gainwell could have a fairly significant complementary role to Sanders.

DeVonta Smith: One year after selecting Jalen Reagor in the first round, the Eagles traded up for the Heisman Trophy winner. The only thing to dislike about Smith is his slight frame, but he was uber-productive in college as he set Alabama school receiving records -- receptions (235), yards (3,965) and touchdowns (46).

Jalen Reagor: Selected one pick before Justin Jefferson (88/1,400/7) in the 2020 NFL Draft, Reagor's disappointing 2020 campaign (31/391/1) became even more pronounced in comparison to Jefferson's success. Durability (five missed games) and sub-par quarterback play didn't help, but there is some breakout potential heading into his second season.

Dallas Goedert: Goedert missed five games including Week 17 last season, but he was a consistent producer following the team's Week 9 bye through Week 16. Over that stretch, Goedert scored the sixth-most fantasy points among tight ends and ranked top five in both receptions (32) and yards (371). Earlier this offseason, expectations were that the Eagles would part ways with Zach Ertz, but he's still on the roster with less than a week to go until the opener.

Zach Ertz: Ertz missed five games, didn't score a touchdown after Week 1 and averaged a career-low 9.3 yards per reception in 2020. While he seemed all but gone at one point this offseason, his presence will most likely frustrate those that roster/start Goedert more than anything else as he should get just enough targets to cap Goedert's upside.

Miles Sanders: Falling short of preseason expectations, Sanders missed four games and averaged just 3.1 yards per target after his catch rate dropped from 79.4% as a rookie to 53.8% in 2020. Although he averaged an impressive 5.3 yards per carry for the season, Sanders failed to exceed 3.8 YPC in four of his final five games. While roster cuts will make the running back room less crowded, comments by running backs coach Jamel Singleton suggest that Sanders may not be featured as heavily as he was last year even though he's the clear RB1.

DeVonta Smith: One year after selecting Jalen Reagor in the first round, the Eagles traded up for the Heisman Trophy winner. The only thing to dislike about Smith is his slight frame, but he was uber-productive as he set Alabama school receiving records -- receptions (235), yards (3,965) and touchdowns (46). Smith is dealing with an MCL injury, but he should be ready for Week 1.

Jalen Reagor: Selected one pick before Justin Jefferson (88/1,400/7) in the 2020 NFL Draft, Reagor's disappointing 2020 campaign (31/391/1) becomes even more pronounced. Durability (five missed games) and sub-par quarterback play didn't help, but Reagor's breakout potential makes him a high-upside late-round pick.

Dallas Goedert: Goedert missed five games including Week 17 last season, but he was a consistent producer following the team's Week 9 bye through Week 16. Over that stretch, Goedert scored the sixth-most fantasy points among tight ends and ranked top five in both receptions (32) and yards (371). Earlier this offseason, expectations were that the Eagles would part ways with Zach Ertz, but that no longer appears to be the case although it can't be ruled out.

Jalen Hurts: With three (most likely) first-round picks next year, the Eagles have positioned themselves to potentially draft a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft. In addition, ESPN's Adam Schefter recently said to "watch Philadelphia" when it comes to a potential Deshaun Watson trade.

Zach Ertz: Missing five games last season, Ertz didn't score a touchdown after Week 1 and averaged a career-low 9.3 yards per reception. Meanwhile, his 30.5 YPG were his lowest since his rookie season (2013, 29.3). With the Eagles unlikely to find a trade partner, Ertz is likely to be on the Week 1 roster, but he enters 2021 as the team's TE2 behind Dallas Goedert.

Fantasy Football Week 8 RB Start'em, Sit'em

The decision on which player to start, or sit, largely comes down to the options on your roster (and/or possibly the players available on your league's waiver wire).

As an example, Giovani Bernard is listed below as a "start" for Week 8. And I'd certainly be comfortable going into Week 8 with him as one of my starting running backs.

Then again, Bernard may be a "sit" for your team.

In other words, if you own both Alvin Kamara, Jonathan Taylor and Bernard, you should start Kamara and Taylor and, in turn, bench Bernard.

For a more direct answer on whether we would start Player X over Player Y, check our Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings. Instead of making those direct comparisons, the goal here is to highlight players that we like, or dislike, for the week.

Week 8 Fantasy Football RB Start'em

Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. DAL)

With Miles Sanders (knee) out in Week 7, Scott carried the ball 12 times for 46 yards and added three receptions for another 46 and a touchdown on five targets. That performance was good enough for him to finish as a top-10 weekly running back across all scoring formats.

Once again, Sanders will be out and Scott is set up for another outstanding performance. The Eagles are double-digit home favorites and have one of the week's highest implied totals based on Vegas odds.

In addition, the Cowboys, who have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs, have allowed a top-14 running back in four consecutive weeks. More recently, Kenyan Drake (20/164/2 rushing, weekly RB2) and Antonio Gibson (20/128/1, RB5) really gashed this defense in Weeks 6 and 7, respectively. On the season, the Cowboys have allowed running backs to average 5.00 YPC (only three teams have allowed more).

Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. TEN)

Like Scott, Bernard stepped in for an injured workhorse (Joe Mixon) and delivered for fantasy owners that started him. While the rushing numbers (13/37/0) weren't all that inspiring, Bernard was productive as a receiver with five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown and he finished the week as fantasy's RB7. Mixon (foot) will get another week of rest before the team's Week 9 bye, which makes Bernard a viable RB2 in Week 8.

Jamaal Williams, Green Bay Packers (vs. MIN)

The theme continues as Williams will get one more week as lead back with Aaron Jones (calf) ruled out. Williams handled 23 (82.1%) of the backfield's touches with Jones out last week and turned those opportunities into 114 scrimmage yards and a touchdown.

After allowing Jonathan Taylor (101) and Derrick Henry (119) to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively, the Vikings rush defense has been better. Over the past three weeks, they have limited running backs to 3.69 YPC. Even so, Williams will get the vast majority of work for what should be one of this week's highest scoring offenses, which makes him a back-end RB1 this week.

Myles Gaskin, Miami Dolphins (vs. LAR)

One of the biggest surprises of the season, Gaskin has become Miami's workhorse back. Not only does Gaskin have at least 13 touches in every game, but the former seventh-round pick out of Washington has more than 20 touches in consecutive games and three of his past four. Gaskin's volume and production has led him to churn out consecutive top-10 fantasy performances.

The Dolphins are home underdogs as Tua Tagovailoa makes his first-ever NFL start. Even though the matchup isn't favorable for Gaskins and the team's backs, his role as a receiver boosts his floor. Through the first six games of the season, Gaskin is averaging 4.5 receptions per game.

Week 8 Fantasy Football RB Sit'em

Devin Singletary, Buffalo Bills (vs. NE)

In a week with four teams on a bye, Singletary isn't a terrible play, but he's outside of my top-24 running backs (albeit barely at RB25), which makes him a flex option. That said, Singletary has been inefficient as a runner (3.78 YPC) and has averaged 3.1, 2.3, 3.2 and 3.6 YPC over his past four games, respectively. Last week, Singletary played only 54% of the offensive snaps and had only 10 touches, both of which are season lows.

The Bills used a third-round pick on Zack Moss, who has played only four games this season but is healthy again. Last week, it was an even split with Singletary and Moss and the rookie was more effective (seven carries for 47 yards and three receptions for 25 yards). It wouldn't be surprising if the duo continues to get an even split and it also wouldn't surprise me if Moss is more effective than Singletary the rest of the way.

Wayne Gallman, New York Giants (vs. TB)

Devonta Freeman (ankle) has been ruled out for Monday night. With Freeman leaving Week 7 early, Gallman had 10 carries for 34 yards and a touchdown and five catches for 20 yards against the Eagles.

The matchup this week against the Buccaneers is one of the most difficult for running backs. The Buccaneers have allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs, but no team has limited opposing running backs to a lower YPC average (2.72) than the Bucs. The Eagles (3.30) are the next closest team. Outside of the Jets, no team has a lower implied total than the Giants this week.

Adrian Peterson, Detroit Lions (vs. IND)

Peterson had 12 touches for 30 scoreless yards against the Falcons in Week 7. With limited work as a receiver (six catches all season), Peterson now has 40 rushing yards or less in three consecutive games. The Colts have limited opposing running backs to only 3.48 YPC and the fifth-fewest fantasy points this season. Meanwhile, rookie D'Andre Swift should continue to be more involved than Peterson and the former Bulldog is a top-20 option in our Week 8 rankings.

Damien Harris, New England Patriots (at BUF)

In a game where there were almost no bright spots, Harris carried the ball 10 times for 58 yards and added a 12-yard reception against the 49ers in Week 7. The second-year back is averaging 5.4 YPC in his three games played this season, but taking a cautious approach with the generally anemic Patriots offense makes sense.

Especially if he leads the backfield in workload and production again in Week 8, it's possible that Harris lands on the "Start'em" side of this post with a matchup against the woeful Jets in Week 9. But for now, keep him (and the team's other backs) on your bench.
