Fantasy Football RB Waiver-Wire Options Heading into Week 9

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be rostered in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some running back waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 9 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by our preference to add.]

1A/1B. Jeremy McNichols/Adrian Peterson, Tennessee Titans (8%/4%)

It's a devastating blow to any manager that rosters Derrick Henry. The back-to-back rushing champion is likely to miss the rest of the regular season (or at least the fantasy season).

The Titans have signed Adrian Peterson, who averaged a pedestrian 3.9 yards per carry for the Detroit Lions last season. The 36-year-old back could handle the largest share of touches at some point down the stretch. McNichols has only seven carries for 38 yards, but he has 21 receptions for 203 yards and a touchdown on 27 targets.

While neither Peterson nor McNichols will come close to what a healthy Henry would have provided fantasy managers, both should emerge as top 35-40 options the rest of the way.

3. Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles (19%)

With Miles Sanders on IR, Scott had 12 carries for 60 yards (5.0 YPC) and two touchdowns in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions. Scott now has three rushing scores in the past two weeks, but teammate Jordan Howard also had a pair of rushing touchdowns as well.

In fact, the trio of Scott, Jordan and Kenneth Gainwell all played 25%-45% of the team's offensive snaps on Sunday. While Scott had the largest share of the snaps, I will most likely rank him ahead of both Howard and Gainwell in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

4. Carlos Hyde, Jacksonville Jaguars (6%)

Hyde's spot in our waiver-wire rankings are dependent upon James Robinson's status for Week 9. (The injury doesn't appear to be serious.) With Robinson (foot) leaving Sunday's game and not returning, Hyde had nine carries for a pedestrian 32 yards and six receptions for 40 yards on eight targets.

If Robinson isn't available in Week 9, Hyde should once again have 15-plus touches. While Hyde and the offense leave a lot to be desired, the volume will push Hyde into flex range if Robinson can't go.

5. Jaret Patterson, Washington Football Team (2%)

WFT has a bye in Week 9 and difficult matchups in Weeks 10 and 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, respectively. That said, Patterson had a career-high 11 carries for 46 yards on Sunday. Meanwhile, Antonio Gibson handled a season-low eight carries and 11 touches on Sunday.

The bye may come at the perfect time for Gibson, who has battled a shin injury all season. It's also possible that Patterson continues to be a part of a three-headed committee going forward as well.

QUARTERBACKS

Tua Tagovailoa360.9224.72544.316.069.9233.7138.21.01166.05
While a redshirt season may make sense given his injury history, head coach Brian Flores has said that there will be a competition at quarterback and hasn't ruled out Tagovailoa from starting as early as Week 1. Given the lack of preseason games, however, it would make sense for Fitzpatrick to be (at least) the early-season starter.
Ryan Fitzpatrick216.5134.61537.29.536.520.290.90.86100.86
Reunited with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, Fitzpatrick was the QB18, QB12 and QB20, respectively, in the three years (2010-12) the duo spent together in Buffalo. That said, it's possible that Miami hands the keys of the franchise to fifth-pick Tua Tagovailoa sooner rather than later.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Matt Breida119.6544.22.3945.9387.92.41122.01
Breida was the odd-man out in San Francisco's backfield down the stretch and he moves to a situation where he has a legitimate shot to lead Miami's backfield in usage and production. The former UDFA has averaged 5.0 yards per carry and 8.4 yards per reception over his first three NFL seasons. While Miami had the league's worst offensive line last year, they made numerous investments -- via the draft and free agency -- to upgrade the unit.
Jordan Howard169.7704.35.6815.4110.10.31117.38
A shoulder injury cut Howard's lone season in Philly short, but he is healthy now. While he won't make much of an impact in the passing game, Howard is an early-down complement to Breida that should also lead the team in carries and rushing touchdowns.
Lynn Bowden Jr.8.736.10.1728.12361.1234.95
Acquired from the Raiders shortly before roster cuts, Bowden Jr. was drafted in the third round by Las Vegas as a running back, but he is expected to play slot receiver for the Dolphins. Not only did he disappoint the Raiders, the 80th-overall pick in 2020, but it's unclear how long it will take him to ramp up with his new team.
Patrick Laird10.639.80.1914.3120.10.6420.97
It will take an injury to either Howard and/or Breida for Laird to become fantasy-relevant in 2020, but he offers some ability as a receiver out of the backfield (23/204/1, 8.9 Y/R in 2019).

WIDE RECEIVERS

DeVante Parker73.71053.96.08000141.87
It was the unconvential fifth-year breakout for Parker, who shattered previous career highs with 72 catches on 128 targets for 1,202 yards and nine touchdowns. Over the final eight games with UDFA Preston Williams sidelined, Parker was at his best -- 44/802/5 on 76 targets in eight games without Williams; 28/400/4 on 52 targets with him. Given the opt outs of the 2020 NFL season by Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns, the duo of Parker and Williams may see an even larger target share with Wilson and Hurns sitting 2020 out.
Preston Williams64.5854.65.48000118.34
The Dolphins made a number of roster improvements through free agency and the draft, but there were no significant additions in terms of pass-catchers. In fact, the group is worse off with Wilson and Hurns opting out. More talented (four-star high school recruit) than his UDFA status (due to off-field reasons) would imply, Williams made an immediate impact for the Dolphins with 32/428/3 in eight games before tearing his ACL. After observing training camp practices open to reporters, Adam Beasley from the Miami Herald wrote that Williams may be "potentially better than ever."

Mike Gesicki55.4617.74.9900091.71
Gesicki is athletic freak -- 4.54 forty and 41.5" vertical -- at tight end and he had a breakout second season, aided by additional opportunities with the season-ending injury to UDFA receiver Preston Williams. Gesicki had five-plus targets in all eight games without Williams but only five-plus in just three of eight with him. More big slot than tight end, Gesicki finished his sophomore campaign as fantasy's TE11. Especially considering the team's WR3/WR4 are sitting 2020 out, Gesicki has the potential to take another significant step forward in year three.

Carson Wentz577.9387.24449.830.0510.6946.7168.10.65297.52
The obvious concern with Wentz is durability as the fourth-year quarterback has now missed at least three games in back-to-back seasons. If he can stay healthy, however, he has a ton of upside compared to his current ADP. Wentz showed how good he could be in 2017 when he was the QB2 through Week 14 before missing the final three weeks of the season. The addition of DeSean Jackson gives Wentz the best and most complete group of weapons that he has had in his young career.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Miles Sanders152.9649.85.3533.4253.80.67126.48
Sanders joins a crowded Philly backfield, but he figures to lead the group in workload and production. That said, the team has used (and still plans to use) a committee approach to their backfield despite using a second-round pick on Sanders.
Jordan Howard135.4548.44.8712.790.20.1994.22
Howard has 250-plus carries in each of his first three seasons, but now that he's in Philadelphia, that streak is sure to come to an end. Howard has 18 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons combined and he'll likely be a TD-dependent play on a weekly basis with Sanders more likely to out-touch him over the full season.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Alshon Jeffery70.9950.17.44000139.65
Jeffery's catch rate was up significantly in 2018 (70.7%) compared to his first season (47.5%, 2017) in Philadelphia and that led to per-game improvements in receptions and yards (5.0/64.8 vs. 3.6/49.3). Missing three games in 2018, Jeffery has now missed at least three games in three of four seasons and has failed to reach the 900-yard mark since 2014.
DeSean Jackson49.2826.64.85.8290.29116.1
In spite of missing four games, Jackson finished 32nd in fantasy points (42nd in PPR) in 2018. Now back in Philadelphia, D-Jax gives the Eagles the deep threat they have lacked. A big play waiting to happen, Jackson has led the NFL in Y/A in 2018 (18.9), 2016 (17.9) and 2014 (20.9).
Nelson Agholor40.7468.12.651.913.30.0464.28
There has been some offseason speculation about Agholor's status with the Eagles. Aside from his touchdowns cut in half year over year (from eight to four), Agholor's 2018 numbers (64/736 on 97 targets) were nearly identical to his 2017 production (62/768 on 95 targets). Barring injuries to others, it's highly unlikely that Agholor duplicates that level of production in 2019.
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside21.3249.21.4900033.86
One of Philadelphia's second-round picks, Arcega-Whiteside should start the season as the team's fourth receiver. A physical receiver with the ability to make tough catches, JJAW could be productive in the red zone during his rookie season.

Zach Ertz97.61034.67.32000147.38
Ertz now has four consecutive 800-yard seasons. While he has had some really productive stretches in previous seasons, the veteran tight end had a breakout season with 116 catches for 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018. At the most top-heavy fantasy position, Ertz is a consensus top-three option.
Dallas Goedert42.54424.0400068.44
Goedert had 33/334/4 as a rookie and Philadelphia's tight ends coach has described his development as "phenomenal." The presence of Ertz contains his breakout potential to a degree, but he has top-five upside if Ertz were to miss any time.

2018 Fantasy Football Projections: Chicago Bears

In addition to viewing our 2018 Fantasy Football Projections by position, we will post our preseason projections per team.

Below you will find our 2018 fantasy football projections for the Chicago Bears.

Quarterbacks

Mitch Trubisky499.5314.7359623.513.548.2245.82.21.2246.22
There is plenty of reason for optimism going into Trubisky's second NFL season. Upgrading their pass-catchers and offensive line in free agency and the draft, the Bears also signed ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as head coach. Even if we don't see the same type of second-year jump we saw from Jared Goff, we have seen the difference better coaching and an improved supporting cast can make going into a quarterback's second season.

Jordan Howard278.11209.78.917.7115.10.51186.88
A top-10 fantasy back in both seasons to start his career, Howard has rushed for 1,100-plus yards in back-to-back seasons. Through his first two seasons with the Bears, Howard has a franchise-high 2,435 rushing yards. [Matt Forte (2,167), Gale Sayers (2,098) and Walter Payton (2,069) are next on the list.] Some have concerns about Howard's ability as a receiver, but apparently new coach Matt Nagy does not belong to that group."
Tarik Cohen87.6376.71.853.4384.51.11.597.72
Owner of one of the best nicknames (The Human Joystick) in all of sports, Cohen scored a rushing, receiving, passing and punt return touchdown in his rookie season. The versatile back had 454 YFS in his first seven games and just 269 YFS over his final nine. That said, Cohen has the potential for a better second season with the offense that has seen Tyreek Hill thrive coming to Chicago.

Wide Receivers

Allen Robinson70.1991.96.70000.2138.99
Going into his age-25 season, Robinson already has an 80/1,400/14 season (2015) under his belt. Missing virtually all of 2017 with a torn ACL (Week 1), rehabbing the injury could inhibit his ability to build (a strong) rapport with Trubisky at least early in his Bears' tenure. That said, getting some preseason work is certainly a positive step as he recovers from his torn ACL.
Anthony Miller50.5636.34.30000.289.03
The second-round rookie is expected to start as the team's slot receiver and the former Memphis Tiger had 95-plus catches for 1,400-plus yards with double-digit touchdowns in each of his past two collegiate seasons.
Taylor Gabriel34.8487.23.14.427.30.10.370.05
Gabriel is coming off a down year (33/378/1) after finishing with 35/579/6 the prior season. Given how the Nagy and the Chiefs have successfully utilized Tyreek Hill, there is some reason for optimism with Gabriel although he isn't worth drafting in standard-sized fantasy leagues.
Kevin White10.394.80.60000.212.68
Going into his fourth season, White has played a total of five NFL games -- zero in 2015, four in 2016 and one in 2017.

Trey Burton58.4689.15.80000.1103.51
With 23 catches for 248 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles last season, Burton has plenty of breakout potential in Matt Nagy's offense in Kansas City. In response to a 600-yard over/under mailbag question, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune calls the over a "lock" and writes that Burton "certainly could challenge" the franchise TE single-season yardage record (Martellus Bennett, 916 in 2014).
Adam Shaheen23246.13.50000.145.41
Before sustaining a right foot injury and sprained ankle in the team's third preseason game, the second-year tight end had been generating some positive buzz. While the injury isn't a Lisfranc injury, there is no timeline set for his return, which puts his status for Week 1 in doubt.

2018 Fantasy Football Projections: Chicago Bears

In addition to viewing our 2018 Fantasy Football Projections by position, we will post our preseason projections per team.

Below you will find our 2018 fantasy football projections for the Chicago Bears.

Quarterbacks

Mitch Trubisky499.5313.7354623.213.548.2245.82.21.2243.02
There is plenty of reason for optimism going into Trubisky's second NFL season. Upgrading their pass-catchers and offensive line in free agency and the draft, the Bears also signed ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as head coach. Even if we don't see the same type of second-year jump we saw from Jared Goff, we have seen the difference better coaching and an improved supporting cast can make going into a quarterback's second season.

Running Backs

Jordan Howard272.41184.98.717.1111.20.51182.81
A top-10 fantasy back in both seasons to start his career, Howard has rushed for 1,100-plus yards in back-to-back seasons. Through his first two seasons with the Bears, Howard has a franchise-high 2,435 rushing yards. [Matt Forte (2,167), Gale Sayers (2,098) and Walter Payton (2,069) are next on the list.] If there's a concern with Howard, however, it's his receiving ability and how he may (or may not) fit in Matt Nagy's offense.
Tarik Cohen89.8386.10.254.1389.51.11.589.56
Owner of one of the best nicknames (The Human Joystick) in all of sports, Cohen scored a rushing, receiving, passing and punt return touchdown in a rookie season. The versatile back had 454 YFS in his first seven games and just 269 YFS over his final nine. That said, Cohen has the potential for a better second season with the offense that has seen Tyreek Hill thrive coming to Chicago.

Wide Receivers

Allen Robinson72.71028.76.90000.2143.87
Turning 25 on August 24th, Robinson had an 80/1,400/14 season (2015) under his belt, but he was lost for (almost) all of 2017 with a torn ACL sustained in Week 1. The good news is that he's been a full-go for the start of training camp as he attempts to learn a new offense.
Anthony Miller48.4609.84.10000.285.18
I expect the second-round rookie out of Memphis to be second on the team in targets and production behind A-Rob. Expected to start as the team's slot receiver, Miller had 95-plus catches for 1,400-plus yards with double-digit touchdowns in each of his past two collegiate seasons.
Taylor Gabriel35.54973.24.427.30.10.371.63
Gabriel is coming off a down year (33/378/1) after finishing with 35/579/6 the prior season. Given how the Nagy and the Chiefs have successfully utilized Tyreek Hill, there is some reason for optimism with Gabriel although he isn't worth drafting in standard-sized fantasy leagues.
Kevin White11.5105.80.70000.214.38
Going into his fourth season, White has played a total of five NFL games -- zero in 2015, four in 2016 and one in 2017.

2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft: 12 Teams, 5th Pick

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While we may not be able to draft a "perfect" fantasy football team, the more we practice, the better our teams will be.

Starting on July 7th, we began drafting (at least) one fantasy football team per day using the 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft Simulator and we will continue to do so up until the start of the 2018 NFL season.

Each day, we will switch things up -- e.g., PPR vs. standard scoring, league size, draft slot, 2-QB leagues, auction leagues, etc.

In addition, we will centralize links to our daily fantasy football mock drafts for an easy way to keep track of our mock drafts.

Details of today's mock draft:
  • Scoring: Standard scoring (i.e., non-PPR scoring)
  • # of Teams: 12
  • Draft Slot: 5
  • Starters: QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, Flex (RB/WR/TE), K, DST
  • Bench Size: 6

With that said, here are the results of today's mock draft:

1.05 - Antonio Brown, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers: As good and consistent as it gets, Brown has finished as a top-three fantasy wide receiver in four consecutive seasons. Over the past five seasons, Brown has 582 receptions for 7,848 yards and 52 touchdowns, all of which leads the league by a wide margin.

2.08 - Jordan Howard, RB, Chicago Bears: A top-10 fantasy back in both seasons to start his career, Howard has rushed for 1,100-plus yards in back-to-back seasons. If there's a concern with Howard, it's his receiving ability and how he may (or may not) fit in Matt Nagy's offense.

3.05 - Tyreek Hill, WR, Kansas City Chiefs: Nearly doubling his receiving yardage to 1,183 in Year 2, Hill closed the season strong with 21 catches for 457 yards and three touchdowns in four December games. There is the potential to improve upon last year's numbers, but the addition of Sammy Watkins (a much more talented WR2) to the receiving corps could diminish his opportunity for a major jump in production.

4.08 - Kenyan Drake, RB, Miami Dolphins: Over the final five games of the 2017 season, Drake ran for a league-high 444 yards on 91 carries (4.88 YPC) with two touchdowns and added 17 receptions for 150 yards. Even if his December workload (21.6 touches per game) doesn't carry over into the 2018 season, he's still likely to be the team's most productive back.

5.05 - Michael Crabtree, WR, Baltimore Ravens: As part of a 1-2 punch with Amari Cooper in Oakland, Crabtree now becomes his team's clear No. 1 wideout. Over the past three seasons, Crabtree has 25 touchdowns, only four receivers have more.

- MORE: Michael Crabtree 2018 Fantasy Football Profile

6.08 - Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers: Since entering the league in 2011, Newton has finished as a top-four fantasy quarterback in all but two seasons (2014 and 2016). Of course, a huge part of his fantasy success is generated by his rushing production. Averaging 7.7 rushing scores per season, Newton has 100-plus rush attempts and 500-plus rushing yards every year except for 2016.

7.05 - Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons: Even if he's the 2 to Devonta Freeman in the team's 1-2 rushing attack, Coleman has finished as a top-24 running back and exceeded 900 yards from scrimmage in each of the past two seasons. The contract-year back has scored 19 total touchdowns since 2016.

- MORE: Devonta Freeman 2018 Fantasy Football Profile

8.08 - Randall Cobb, WR, Green Bay Packers: Since exceeding 800-plus yards in his three healthy seasons from 2012 to 2015, Cobb has 600-something yards in back-to-back seasons. Given a secure WR2 role, Cobb could bounce back provided that he and Rodgers can stay healthy.

9.05 - Sterling Shepard, WR, New York Giants: Even though he missed five games, Shepard posted a career high in receiving yards (731) and set a career high in receptions on a per-game basis (5.36). Shepard will have an opportunity to post full-season career highs as the team's WR2.

10.08 - Trey Burton, TE, Chicago Bears: Burton had 23 catches for 248 yards and five touchdowns as the second tight end behind Zach Ertz last season. Signed to a four-year deal, Burton has plenty of breakout potential in the "U" role that Travis Kelce occupied in Matt Nagy's offense in Kansas City.

11.05 - Devontae Booker, RB, Denver Broncos: The Broncos used a third-round pick on Royce Freeman, who could/should overtake Booker at some point during the season. But it's not out of the question that Booker gets as much work as Freeman.

12.08 - George Kittle, TE, San Francisco 49ers: Ending the season with a bang, Kittle had four catches for 100 yards in Week 17 against the Rams and he finished his rookie campaign with 43/515/2. Among rookie tight ends, only New York's Evan Engram had more receptions or yards.

13.05 - Giovani Bernard, RB, Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Mixon missed some time, but Bernard was highly productive down the stretch. In five December games, Bernard had 507 YFS, averaged 4.75 YPC with 24 receptions and two scores.

14.08 - Latavius Murray, RB, Minnesota Vikings: A top-20 fantasy back (standard-scoring formats) for three years in a row, Murray will need an injury to Dalvin Cook to extend that streak to four seasons. But he's worth a dart throw in Round 14.

15.05 - Houston Texans D/ST

16.08 - Dan Bailey, K, Dallas Cowboys
