Fantasy Football Week 3 RB Waiver Wire

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be rostered in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

So that means that players like Tony Pollard (53% rostered) will be excluded from our list due to our self-imposed restrictions, but he's clearly worth adding in your league whether you roster Ezekiel Elliott or not.

With that said, here are some running back waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 3 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by our preference to add.]

1. James White, New England Patriots (42%)

Once again, White appears on this list.

In his two final seasons playing with Tom Brady (2018-2019), White had a minimum of 95 targets, 72 receptions and 645 receiving yards each season. Through two games with Mac Jones, White is on pace to better those numbers.

White now has six receptions in back-to-back games and has a total of 32 rushing yards and a touchdown plus 12 receptions for 94 yards on 13 targets. Heading into Monday Night Football, White is fantasy's RB14 (half-PPR) and the RB9 in full PPR formats.

2. Michael Carter, New York Jets (50%)

The UNC rookie generated positive buzz early in camp despite beginning the season as part of an uninspiring three-headed RBBC. Based on talent, it wouldn't be surprising if Carter emerged as an RB3/flex option at some point during the season.

In a game where there were very few bright spots, Carter averaged more than five yards per carry as he gained 59 yards on 11 carries and added a couple of receptions for 29 yards. Through two games, here are the team's running back touches: Carter (18), Ty Johnson (17) and Tevin Coleman (14). Johnson had 12 carries for 50 yards on Sunday.

The Jets have a difficult matchup against the Denver Broncos in Week 3, but they face softer matchups in Weeks 4 (Tennessee Titans) and 5 (Atlanta Falcons).

3. J.D. McKissic, Washington Football Team (29%)

McKissic was a non-factor in Week 1 (one carry for eight yards), but the usage was much better in Week 2. Not only did he haul in five catches for 83 yards on six targets, but he added 10 rushing yards and a score as well.

Antonio Gibson had five targets in Week 1, but he only had two in Week 2. That's clearly frustrating for those that roster Gibson, but McKissic is one of the league's best receiving backs and only Alvin Kamara (83) had more receptions than McKissic (80) in 2020.

4. Cordarrelle Patterson, Atlanta Falcons (13%)

A RB/WR hybrid in fantasy, Patterson now has seven carries in back-to-back games. Even though he gained only 11 yards on his seven carries this week, he added five catches for 58 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns against the Buccaneers.

Mike Davis has had at least 16 touches in each of the team's first two games this season, but C-Patt has a total of 21 touches through two weeks. With Wayne Gallman a healthy scratch, the only other back to get touches this season has been Keith Smith (seven).

On his fifth team since entering the league in 2015, Davis has career averages of 3.7 YPC and 6.5 Y/R. Through his first two games as a Falcon, he's averaging just 3.63 YPC and 4.8 Y/R. Patterson may never be the team's RB1 as long as Davis is healthy, but if he continues to be much more efficient than Davis, it's not an impossibility either.

5. Peyton Barber, Las Vegas Raiders (10%)

As uncomfortable as I'd be having to start Barber, the journeyman back handled the bulk of early-down opportunities in the absence of Josh Jacobs in Week 2. If Jacobs isn't available in Week 3, it's possible that Barber sees another 10-15 carries. Jon Gruden has called Jacobs "very questionable" for Week 3.

Fantasy Football RB Waiver Wire Week 2

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be rostered in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some running back waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 2 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by our preference to add.]

1. Eli Mitchell, San Francisco 49ers (8%)

When the 49ers traded up in the third round to draft Ohio State's Trey Sermon, many jumped to the conclusion that Sermon would earn a substantial Day 1 workload. With Sermon a (surprise) healthy scratch, it was another rookie that had a massive workload and productive day.

It's unclear how much work the team would have allocated to Mitchell, the 194th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, if Raheem Mostert (knee) didn't exit the game early. With Mostert leaving after two carries, however, Mitchell carried the ball 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. While JaMycal Hasty also had a three-yard touchdown, it was his only carry.

Mostert will miss the rest of the season and Mitchell should be in line for the largest share of the workload (at least, in the short term) even assuming that Sermon would be active.

The 49ers will head to Philadelphia for a Week 2 matchup against the Eagles.

2. Tony Jones Jr., New Orleans Saints (23%)

In two seasons with the Saints, Latavius Murray averaged 11.26 touches per game and he finished as fantasy's RB33 (2020) and RB29 (2019), respectively, in half-PPR scoring. In the first game with Murray no longer on the roster, Jones assumed the complementary role to Alvin Kamara and handled 12 touches.

Jones racked up 53 scoreless scrimmage yards (50 rushing and three receiving), but that level of workload would likely yield flex-level production for those that roster Jones this season. And if Kamara were to miss any time, there is enormous weekly upside for Jones. In the two games that Kamara missed and Murray was active, Murray had a total of 62 touches, 307 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns.

3. James White, New England Patriots (33%)

In the opener, White had six catches for 49 yards on seven targets and four carries for 12 yards. With Mac Jones taking the reigns from Cam Newton, there will undoubtedly be more running back targets in 2021 than in 2020.

Before hauling in 49 receptions for 375 yards on 62 targets last season, White had a minimum of 95 targets, 72 receptions and 645 receiving yards in each of the previous two seasons with Tom Brady under center. Perhaps a return to that level of receiving production is unlikely, but he's a viable RB3/flex, especially in full PPR formats.

4. Mark Ingram, Houston Texans (19%)

Unanimously ranked 32nd in our consensus NFL Power Rankings, the Texans may not jump out to such a commanding lead again like they did in this one -- 27-7 lead at halftime -- for the rest of the season. That said, Ingram had 26 of the running back's 41 touches (63.4%) Sunday for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Perhaps he never sees north of 25 touches again, but it's difficult to ignore that kind of workload. Heading into Monday Night Football, only Cincinnati's Joe Mixon (33) and Christian McCaffrey (30) had more touches on the week. Minnesota's Dalvin Cook also had 26 touches.

Game script for next week's matchup against the Cleveland Browns could force the Texans into catchup mode early, but if Ingram continues to handle Houston's largest share of the workload, he may enter the flex range in more competitive matchups.

5. Kenneth Gainwell, Philadelphia Eagles (8%)

Philadelphia's 30 running back touches were allocated, as follows: Miles Sanders (19), Gainwell (11) and Boston Scott (zero). Based on Week 1 usage, Gainwell appears to be well ahead of Scott on the depth chart. The rookie from Memphis surprised many when he slipped to the fifth round, but it may not surprise many that he's carved out a signifcant role as a change-of-pace option to Sanders. In his NFL debut, Gainwell had nine carries for 37 yards and a score plus two receptions for six yards on three targets.

Fantasy Football Projections 2021: New England Patriots

Our 2021 Fantasy Football Projections will be viewable by both position and team.

Below you will find our 2021 fantasy football projections for the New England Patriots.

Jarrett Stidham17.410.4118.30.730.684.63.50.056.94

Mac Jones: While it would be unfair to compare any quarterback to Tom Brady, Jones (like Brady) makes up for a lack of elite arm strength and mobility with quick processing ability and accuracy. Not only did Jones beat out Cam Newton for the starting job, but he won't have to look other his shoulder (if he struggles) with Newton no longer on the roster.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
Damien Harris230.11058.55.7521.6170.20.9173.57

Jakob Johnson0005.631.50.27.15
Brandon Bolden1.25.20.031.18.402.09

Damien Harris: In terms of usage, Harris has been a non-factor as a receiver (five receptions in 2020) and that may not change much with James White returning to Foxboro given his well-defined third-down role within the Patriots offense. With New England handing the keys to the franchise to Mac Jones, the fantasy outlook for Harris should improve as he won't have to worry about Cam Newton vulturing rushing touchdowns.

James White: With Tom Brady in Tampa, White set five-year lows in targets (62), touches (84), yards from scrimmage (496) and touchdowns (three). White benefits from the team moving on from Cam Newton as it should translate into fewer QB rush attempts and more running back targets.

Rhamondre Stevenson: Stevenson's strong play -- 30/216/5 rushing in three preseason games -- was one factor the Patriots were comfortable parting ways with Sony Michel. Even so, the fourth-round rookie out of Oklahoma will likely need an injury to either Harris and/or White to be a factor in fantasy this season.

Gunner Olszewski2.833.60.21.46.40.036.78

Jakobi Meyers: Meyers led the Patriots with 81 targets, 59 receptions and 729 yards in 2020. While the team added Nelson Agholor and Kendall Bourne in free agency, there's a good chance that the Meyers leads the position group in receiving once again.

Nelson Agholor: Agholor set a career high in receiving yards (896) and tied a career high in touchdowns (eight) in his lone season in Las Vegas. While I expect Meyers to continue to perform as the team's WR1, it wouldn't surprise me if Agholor came close to duplicating his 2020 numbers.

Jonnu Smith: One year after investing a pair of Day 2 picks at the position, the Patriots double-dipped in the free-agent tight end market with Smith and Hunter Henry. Smith scored more touchdowns in 2020 (nine including a rushing score) than he did in his first three NFL seasons combined (eight). And while he set career highs in targets (65), receptions (41) and receiving yards (448), Smith likely frustrated his fantasy managers as he was held to 20 receiving yards or less in more than half of his games last season.

Hunter Henry: Missing multiple games in four consecutive seasons including all of 2018, Henry had 60 catches on 93 targets, both of which were career highs, for 613 yards and four touchdowns in 2020. Unfortunately for both Smith and Henry, however, their individual upside may cancel each other out.

Mac Jones203.5132.31475.48.754.5819.961.70.594.03

Cam Newton: Newton struggled as a passer in 2020 and many reasons -- return from injury, new team with unusual offseason, lack of pass-catching talent, etc. -- attributed to his woeful passing numbers. Even though 33 quarterbacks threw more touchdowns than Newton (eight) and he threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns, he also scored the 16th-most fantasy points as he rushed for 12 touchdowns.

Likely to run for fewer scores and throw for more, Newton has improved weapons in the passing game. At this point of the preseason, Newton appears to be in the driver's seat for the starting job even though Mac Jones, New England's first-round pick, has made it a real competition. If Newton struggles, however, it's possible that the Patriots make a (permanent) midseason switch to Jones.

Mac Jones: While it would be unfair to compare any quarterback to Tom Brady, Jones (like Brady) makes up for a lack of elite arm strength and mobility with quick processing ability and accuracy. It would be reasonable to assume that Jones makes some starts during the season even if he doesn't win the job outright to begin the season.

Damien Harris: In terms of usage, Harris is a non-factor as a receiver (five receptions in 2020) and that likely won't change much with James White returning to Foxboro given his well-defined third-down role within the Patriots offense. The other major obstacle to Harris being a top-24 option is the presence of Cam Newton, who rushed for six times as many touchdowns as Harris (12 to two) in 2020. As long as Newton holds off Mac Jones as the starter, there is the chance/likelihood that he vultures goal-line opportunities from Harris. While the skill set is there for a breakout, he's more correctly drafted as a flex option, which matches his ADP.

James White: With Tom Brady in Tampa, White set five-year lows in targets (62), touches (84), yards from scrimmage (496) and touchdowns (three). White would likely benefit from a quarterback shift from Newton to Jones as it would likely translate into fewer QB rush attempts and more running back targets.

Rhamondre Stevenson: Stevenson's strong play -- 25/193/4 rushing in two preseason games -- could lead to the Patriots parting ways with Sony Michel. Even so, the fourth-round rookie out of Oklahoma is unlikely to carry much fantasy value in 2021 as both Harris and White will be featured more prominently even if Michel is cut/dealt.

Week 12 Fantasy Football RB Waiver-Wire Rankings

Every week, we examine players that may be available on your league's waiver wire that could help your team in the short and/or long term.

For a player to be listed, he must be owned in 50 percent (or less) of Yahoo! leagues. The goal is to provide recommendations of players that have a greater chance of being available on your league's waiver wire. Of course, your league's size and settings could significantly impact whether these players (or better options) are available in your particular league(s).

With that said, here are some running back waiver-wire options to consider heading into Week 12 (Yahoo! % rostered in parenthesis):

[Note: Players listed below are sorted by our preference to add.]

1. Gus Edwards, Baltimore Ravens (29%)

As much as I expected COVID-19 to lead to many surprise inactives throughout the season that would lead to a fantasy football version of the Wild, Wild West, that hasn't really materialized (yet). Perhaps it will in the final month-plus of the season as cases explode across the country, but so far, so good.

That said, Edwards gets a COVID-infused bump in workload as both J.K. Dobbins and Mark Ingram have been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list today and will miss Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The general rule with the team's backfield was the trio negating each other's fantasy relevance with a generally even workload split, although Dobbins handled 17 (73.9%) of the team's 23 backfield touches in Week 11.

As Garafolo says (or tweets), "all about the Gus Bus."

2. James White, New England Patriots (40%)

White had five carries for 19 yards and added six receptions for 64 yards on nine targets in Week 11 against the Houston Texans. White's workload (11 touches) was nearly as much as his previous four games combined (13).

Sony Michel was a healthy scratch as Damien Harris continued to handle the bulk of early-down work, but the versatile Rex Burkhead tore his ACL in Week 11. While neither Harris nor Michel are involved much as receivers, White should see his role expand as the team's primary pass-catching back going forward.

3. Frank Gore, New York Jets (10%)

Gore had 15 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown and added two catches for 10 yards in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. It's easy to root for Gore as a player in a real life, but he's generally a low-upside, uninspiring option in fantasy. That said, La'Mical Perine will "miss time" due to a high-ankle sprain. With the injury, Gore should have more opportunities to handle 15-20 touches like he did in Week 11.

It's possible that kind of volume pushes Gore into flex range, but he's had 14-plus carries in six games this season. Here are Gore's weekly finishes in those weeks: RB44 (Week 2), RB37 (Week 3), RB48 (Week 4), RB23 (Week 6), RB36 (Week 9) and WR11 (so far in Week 11).

4. Carlos Hyde, Seattle Seahawks (46%)

Recovered from his hamstring injury and returning after a three-game absence, Hyde turned 16 touches into 95 scrimmage yards and a score against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday Night Football. Pete Carroll has said that Chris Carson (foot) will play in Week 12 and that Rashaad Penny is a couple weeks away. Even if Carson is active in Week 12, Hyde is a high-end handcuff.

5. Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys (19%)

As the clear handcuff to Ezekiel Elliott, Pollard has received a larger workload over the past six weeks. During that span, Pollard has a minimum of eight touches in five games and has averaged 8.83 touches per game over that span. More efficent than Elliott, the second-year back from Memphis has 157 rushing yards (7.48 YPC) and three catches for 25 yards (8.33 Y/R) over the past three games.

At this point, the Cowboys are very much in the thick of things in the NFC Least. If the team falls out of contention for the division, however, Pollard could earn an even larger role towards the end of the season.

6. Cam Akers, Los Angeles Rams (30%)

Here's what I wrote in last week's Waiver Wire post:

Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown had eight touches each.) Akers now has at least nine carries in back-to-back games and the second-round pick has the talent to earn a larger role down the stretch. If you have the bench space, Akers is worth a stash.

While Akers and the Rams won't play until Monday Night to give us any potential additional clarity with the backfield, Akers remains worthy of a RB stash as we head down the stretch.

Cam Newton554.7341.13855.224.6813.8764.9298.52.92272.56
Reports indicate that Bill Belichick has informed the team that the one-time league MVP will start in Week 1, even if he refuses to publicly name Newton as the starter. Playing only two games in 2019, the chip-on-his-shoulder version of Newton offers plenty of upside if he can stay healthy in 2020 as he has five top-four fantasy seasons under his belt.

RUNNING BACKS

PlayerAtt.YardsTDRec.YardsTDPoints
James White67.12651.6859.4525.74.16114.11
Perennially undervalued in fantasy drafts, it was White, not Sony Michel, that has led the Patriots running backs in fantasy scoring in both of Michel's first two seasons. One of the league's best pass-catching backs, White has more than 70 catches in back-to-back seasons and that trend could continue in 2020 given the team's relatively weak group of pass-catchers.
Sony Michel143557.73.586.347.90.1983.18
With Tom Brady now in Tampa, perhaps the Patriots rely more heavily on the ground game, but Michel's lack of involvement as a receiver make him a TD-or-bust weekly option. Ending the year as the RB28 in half-PPR formats, Michel finished as a weekly top-18 back only twice last year.
Damien Harris105.6411.82.117.455.50.2260.71
A third-round pick in 2019, Harris managed only four carries for 12 yards in two games last season. As difficult as it is to decypher how this coaching staff will allocate touches to the team's running backs, Harris carries with him some sleeper appeal into the 2020 season. That said, a hand injury puts his Week 1 status in jeopardy.
Rex Burkhead44180.41.3215.5136.40.8144.46
Burkhead averaged a little more than seven touches (7.08) per game and 44.7 scrimmage yards per game last season. When the backfield is at full strength, Burkhead's 2020 usage rate is unlikely to exceed his 2019 rate.

WIDE RECEIVERS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Julian Edelman84.4949.55.065.531.90.06128.86
Extremely consistent since becoming a prominent part of the Patriots offense in 2013, Edelman had 100 catches for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns on 153 targets last season. It was the third time that Edelman has played a full 16-game slate over that span and the veteran slot receiver has a minimum of 150 targets, 98 catches and 1,056 yards in each of those three seasons. With Tom Brady now in Tampa, however, it's likely that Edelman fails to repeat those numbers even if he manages to play all 16 games in his age-34 season.
N'Keal Harry51.1682.24.474.4330.0498.58
Harry spent the first half of the year on IR and managed just 12/105/2 receiving over seven regular-season games to close the season. The 2019 first-round pick will obviously improve upon his rookie numbers, but it's unclear how quickly he will be able to develop a strong rapport with a new quarterback in an unusual offseason. Reports that Gunner Olszewski has outplayed Harry in training camp doesn't generate much excitement for a second-year breakout from last year's first-rounder.
Jakobi Meyers31.5417.42.2100055

TIGHT ENDS

PlayerRec.YardsTDRushYardsTDPoints
Devin Asiasi35.9418.23.3200061.74
With Matt LaCosse opting out of the 2020 season, Asiasi and fellow rookie Dalton Keene sit atop the team's tight end depth chart. While rookie tight ends often struggle to make a significant impact in their first season, Asiasi has been getting some rave reviews at camp.

Cam Newton554.7341.13799.724.1313.8764.9298.52.92268.14
While not guaranteed to be the starter when a signed his one-year deal, all signs point to the one-time league MVP winning the competition for the starting gig. As ESPN's Mike Reiss notes, Jarrett Stidham is "fading out of the quarterback picture" and it's been "basically the Cam Newton Show." Playing only two games in 2019, the chip-on-his-shoulder version of Newton offers plenty of upside if he can stay healthy in 2020. In his first eight NFL seasons, Newton performed as a top-four fantasy quarterback five times.

Ending the year as the RB28 in half-PPR formats, Michel finished as a weekly top-18 back only twice last year. In addition, Michel, who was placed on the active/PUP list, isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1, but RBs coach Ivan Fears hasn't ruled it out.
Rex Burkhead55225.51.6514.6128.50.7749.92
Burkhead averaged a little more than seven touches (7.08) per game and 44.7 scrimmage yards per game last season. When the backfield is at full strength, Burkhead's 2020 usage rate is unlikely to exceed his 2019 rate.
Lamar Miller37.41590.945.641.20.226.86
At a minimum, Miller, who missed all of 2019 with a torn ACL, provides insurance for Michel (foot), who may not be ready for Week 1. More than likely, however, it just adds more uncertainty to a backfield that is often difficult to project.
Damien Harris90.2351.81.85.6420.1751.2
A third-round pick in 2019, Harris managed only four carries for 12 yards in two games last season. Often difficult to decypher how the coaching staff will allocate touches to the team's running backs, Harris has some sleeper appeal as there is a chance that Michel lands on the PUP (and sits the first six weeks) and free-agent addition Lamar Miller is returning from a torn ACL.

Sanu spent half his season with Atlanta (33/313/1 in seven games) and half with New England (26/207/1 in eight games). Given the unusual offseason and change at quarterback, Sanu is nothing more than bench depth in the deepest of leagues.

In his first eight NFL seasons, Newton performed as a top-four fantasy quarterback five times.
Jarrett Stidham111.270.6739.54.612.55.520.90.1145.77
With the Patriots signing Newton, beat reporters haven't ruled out Stidham still beating out his fellow Auburn alum. Even if he wins the quarterback competition this offseason, Stidham won't be much more than a QB streamer in his first season as an NFL starter.

Sony Michel143557.73.585.4410.1682.31
The last time the Patriots finished outside the top 12 in both scoring and total offense was when Michel was eight years old (2003). In addition, Michel, who had May foot surgery, was placed on the active/PUP list and isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1, especially with the Pats signing Lamar Miller as insurance.
